Where do people take this "jRPGs get 50% of their sales from Japan" thing from? Unless we are talking about Dragon Quest I dont get it.

Final Fantasy sells more in the West
Kingdom Hearts sells more in the West
Star Ocean sells more in the West
Same for Tales of lately, and all recent new IPs like TLR, IU, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon.

Saying that japanese market is more important for jRPGs than the western one is very 1995-ish. Ever since FFVII came out it has been the other way around.

You just picked the three best selling WRPGs and said there are very few JRPGs that can match them. I don't really see how that's unexpected. Why would I expect every JRPG to sell on the level of the most hyped WRPGs?

I just used fanboy rethorics lol.

I'm a big fan of WRPGs, but very angry about the naive, simplistic and childish JRPG genre.

Then play some of the more mature JRPGs:

  • Tales of Vesperia
  • Last Remnant
  • Persona 4
  • Valkyria Chronicles

There are enough JRPGs out there that aren't childish. The issue is that the general JRPG & success formula dictates tons of anime-esque characters, and rehashing the same turn-based menus we saw if FFIV in 1991.

WKC did great compared to the other HD RPG titles that came out this year in Japan.

Phantasy Star is a bit of a disappointment though. Expected higher.

It sold better, but not by much. I think people were expecting it to sell twice that amount in it's first week. Let's see if it stay above 100K next week. or drops below 50K.

Tales of Vesperia sold 106K

Last Remnant sold 105K

Valkyria Chronicles only sold 78K

Disgaea 3 sold only 20K in the U.S.

Both Tales of Vesperia and Last Remnant sold on a system that have less then 1/2 the number of console sales than the PS3 has in Japan. So their sales are actually more impressive.

which makes the ps3 look more impressive worldwide, as the 360 is supposed to have 5-6 million more consoles in homes yet most multiplat games dont really sell that much more on the 360.

Given the situation of the PS3 in Japan, I think that FFXIII will easily sell better in the West. XII was a unique situation in the fact that the PS2 was more viable in Japan at the time than the West, I believe (and still is that way).

wtf FFXII sold more in the West than it did in Japan... what are you guys talking about

What WKC has proven is that square-enix had the right idea and jrpgs have to be released multiplatform.

Yes it's the biggest first day if a jrpg in Japan but not by a huge amount 132K v 80K for vesperia.

Yes vesperia is an established franchise but WKC is developed by level 5 which easily makes up for that. I don't think a lot of people realise what a big deal L5 are. Last year at the TGS their booth had longer lines than any other, even beating SE. They are THE developer in Japan at the moment. They have a massive following.

My guess is had WKC been on the 360 exclusive it would have had a higher opening than vesperia. Probably 90-100k.

So really all we know now is this isn't like last gen where if you were making a jrpg you had to go Ps2. The 360 clearly provides enough sales of these games to make it worth developing for. What will be interesting will be how WKC does outside Japan. The gap in Japan certainly isn't so big that it shows worldwide the PS3 is better at selling jrpgs.

So basically looks like S-E made a great decision taking FF13 multiplatform and I wouldn't be surprised if more and more jrpg developers started doing the same.

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

Zim-

Here's to hoping more and more JRPGs go multi-platform. Even if it's at the expense of precious 360 JRPGs going MP. More JRPGs for more people is always a better thing :)

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

This site is gettin crazy. If a game is Playstation exclusive people jump to the conclusion that it has a very big budget. The HD consoles really arent going to be vastly different. This is a new IP unlike Tales and isnt SQ Enix like Infinite Undiscovery and 130k first day is decent. Not sure how first week goes maybe170k.
Does releasing on 25th December make any difference in Japan? Seeing as over here its only pubs that open it would be nice if anone has any idea, cheers.
