Well, that's a much catchier and more appealing title than "GameSpot Genre Awards 2008", so hopefully I'll get more replies.

For a while now, there have been five (main) contenders for Game of The Year 2008:

-LittleBigPlanet

-Gears of War 2

-Grand Theft Auto IV

-Fallout 3

-Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots.

Now, to explain the crossouts.

LittleBigPlanet: IGN 9.5, GameSpot 9. Failed to win Best PS3 Game from IGN, failed to win Best Platformer from GameSpot.

Gears of War 2: IGN 9.5, GameSpot 9. Failed to win Best X360 Game from IGN, failed to win Best Shooter from GameSpot.

Grand Theft Auto IV: Aha. This is what many people thought would take the overall title. IGN: 10. GameSpot 10. However, it's been repeatedly trounced in awards. Not only did it fail to win Best PS3, X360 AND PC Game from IGN, it also failed to get Best PS3 Action Adventure. So, with only PC and X360 Action Adventure, neither of which have MGS4, Best Action Adventure Overall will go to MGS4.

As for GameSpot, it has already failed to win Best Action Adventure which, again, went to MGS4. The Platform Awards are released tomorrow, but it's pretty certain that GTA4 won't be appearing in them.

Now, for the two contenders:

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots

IGN 10, GameSpot 10

Action / Action Adventure

PS3 Exclusive

Main Awards so far: Best PS3 Action Game (IGN), Best PS3 Game (IGN), Best Action Adventure (GameSpot)

Fallout 3

IGN 9.6/9.4, GameSpot 9.0/8.5

Role-Playing Game

Xbox 360, PC, PS3 (version thought to be inferior)

Main Awards So Far: Best PS3 RPG (IGN), Best X360 RPG (IGN), Best PC RPG (IGN), Best X360 Game (IGN), Best RPG (GameSpot)

I personally think that MGS4 is going to win this. The score difference is clear, especially from GameSpot, and rarely is a score difference that large ignored. Fallout 3 will certainly not be PS3 GoTY from GameSpot, although either it or GTA4 will take the X360 award. That's GameSpot out of the way.

IGN. Best X360 Game: Fallout 3. Best PS3 Game: MGS4. This is much closer, only a 0.4 score difference. IGN seems to like exclusives, giving GoTY to exclusives in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Maybe I'm reading into this too much, but look at the wording in the paragraph. They stated that choosing X360 GoTY was a very hard decision, while they mentioned nothing of the sort in the PS3 GoTY. In fact, they seemed to imply it was leagues above anything else released on PS3.

Two GoTY awards should give MGS4 a nice sales boost, I think.

Well, that's my opinion. Which of the two giants do you think will take the overall title from...the two giants? Both are great games, and we can all celebrate at the end because that overhyped GTA IV isn't winning

How bad is Fallout 3 on PS3 compared to the 360 version with some of the bugs fixed now? Are the graphics noticeably worse? I'm still thinkin on gettin that or GTA4....

No but seriously, I hear it's not that bad. Just a few framerate drops now and then. Plus, they've patched it with trophies now.

I think Fallout 3 and MGS4 are probably the two best games released this year, yes. However, I would choose Fallout 3 as my GotY, unlike the OP.

I just got the PC version of Fallout for Xmas. I'll take a look and see if it's really THAT big a difference from the PS3 version which I rented a few weeks ago. Any way I'd have to give MGS4 game of the decade. What a masterpiece.

Fallout 3 is good if not a bit disappointing and Gears of War 2 is great but I wish LittleBigPlanet would get the award. MGS4 deserves recognition but I just don't want to see GTA4 get any more undeserved praise.

MGS4 = Game of Year.
