So that's the reason there were no serious price cuts before Christmas

For Sony, the PlayStation 3 has always been a loss-maker – its parts costing more than the price consumers pay for it on the shop shelf.

Two years ago, when it was first released, the PS3 cost around $800 (£540) to make and retailed at just $600 (£400).

Two years on and the margins have significantly shrunk but, according to Business Week, the console is still losing money for Sony – around $50 (£35) per machine.

AND SO it begins. So is the gaming industry empire will gonna be collapsed? Really shoul bail out PS3 if SONY wants to survive

end of core gaming days prediction:

E3 2006-The beginning of the end. Wii introduced

E3 2008- Armageddon. Wii motion plus introduced. Wii Music. Reggie says Animal crossing was a core game. Massive disappointment. many Wii core gamers selling their Wii.

E3 2010- Tape runs out

With the new 45nm Cell and RSX hitting around March or so, Sony should have enough margin to cut price again by summer if they feel the need to. And as the number of PS3's sold continues to rise, software sales will as well, which will continue to offset losses made on hardware. One thing for sure is that we'll definitely be seeing a big price-cut from Sony by the end of next year. Especially in Japan, with it's strong yen and Final Fantasy XIII exclusive to it, Sony really can't afford not to make the most of that release by dropping to price and vastly expanding their potential market.

I think that's a very narrow minded view. If you take into account unknown costs like marketing, R&D and warranty repairs they may be losing more than that per PS3 sold.

However Sony already invested a lot in the PS3, soon Sony should be able to reap the fruits of their investments. So IMO that would be very stupid timing and Sony is not going to do that. PS3 software already sells well more than PS2 software.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

*sigh* me? narrow minded? Im telling the truth. Im more concerned on that post than incite flame here. Do you all really think SONY could pass this predicament? If SONY develop and focus more on PS2 they could outsell and profited more than Nintendo. PS2 WAS STILL the most popular console this generation...

even SONY is profiting in their PS3 I think its too late for SONY right now. SONY really cant recoup their losses with Ps3's first two years. The damage has already been done. In the coming Q2 2009 Wiis are in 50 million mark theres nothing SONY can do to catch up right now...

why do you keep banging on about losses that sony is currently making................i mean do u play games or play sales? i dunno why the mention of te wii because the titles in comparison to sony are no match.
