Not really, the movie was just one of the symptoms of the illness that the success of FFVII brought over Square.
They thought they could do no wrong and became more and more megalomanical resulting in their retail disaster, higher and higher budgets for games that performed worse and worse, their online disaster that went nowhere etcetera.
In the end the movie was just a blip on the radar to their doom and that had been set in motion because of the succes of FFVII.
