Forums - Gaming - Why is realistic graphics so important?

Games that stem from the real world I would like to continue their path to look like their source material. This includes racing games, sports games, war games and licensed games. There is plenty of room to have both, no matter how much graphics advance. Why would I want my Madden NFL game stylized though? The point is to get as close as possible to get you playing exactly what you see on a televised game. Let some other football game go for a kooky art style. Why would anyone want Forza, Grid and Gran Turismo to not strive for realism? If they make a new movie licensed game, wouldn't I want it to look like the movie?

You might eventually want madden stylized because as the graphics improve, you'll find that the models look more and more off.  There are some inherant problems in rendering people, especially in fast moving sports.  The animations and motion will always be off and way off.  This is, in part, due to the fact that athletes prepare to move before they actually do move.  So once they finally make the move (as you see it), they've already been moving for a while.  That's why it is hard to tackle a man in the open field.  You are reacting to a move they're already doing.

The game can't do this unless they want to introduce lag into the control scheme.  Even if they could solve this issue, there are a variety of other problems as well in terms of reproducing human movement.  Right now, they're not even close.  Getting higher quality textures is a given.  Rendering more details is a given.  Reproducing human movements is not.

QFT.  Games with sytlized visuals tend to have better character animations.  Look at Shadow of the Colossus.  The way the main character moves in that game is not only fluid, but also borderline realistic.

Improved graphics increase one's immersion in their games but I don't think it's really worth. For me, the graphics are one of the least important aspects of a game.

I want realistic graphics because games give us the chance to do things we could probably never do in real life, so i want to feel like im as close to actually douing these things as possible

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Graphics in general aren't really important to the vast majority of gamers.

The fact that the OG Game Boy with its green and black scheme virtually annihilated the Game Gear and its full color scheme should make this pretty obvious.

And really, when has the console that's capable of the most eye candy ever come anywhere near being the market leader?

Why is'nt it. Well i for one like too see games advance each gen just like the hardware does. Or in Wii's case does'nt.

Why is photorealism so important?

For FPS and similar testosterone-soaked killfests, it's necessary because it provides a better rush of aggression hormones: closer to the real thing, you know.

For anything else, it's all but useless: a crutch for people who have lost their ability to imagine. They need help, not coddling, but the path of least resistance is just so much more convenient.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

RPG's, sports games, racing games will all obviously look and feel better..provided the animation can keep up with the increased image quality.video games have barely reached the quality of toy story(96) so there is a lot of progress to be made.

sonic unleashed looks awesome for a platformer and its much better than the previous 3d sonic titles. gameplay is king but visuals are important too.

i agree, gameplay is king, but graphics do have some importance. espically in racing games because if the enviornment is photo realistic then it makes you feel like your really driving and you get into it

Like a said, a crutch for the unimaginative. People have been immersing themselves in racing games since the days of the NES or even before, and the added photorealism does nothing to change this.

great gamecube and xbox graphics still amaze me. they got to the point where graphics were starting to get to the point where they are good enough to make it so better graphics won't make the games better at all. ps3 and 360 made a huge leap with the help of hd to get to the point where there's no point to graphics improving much beyond that.

when looking at a very good looking gamecube game like twilight princess all i want above those graphics to make them pretty much be perfect is a few more polygons on character models, get textures up to ps360 levels, hd, and improved lighting and special effects, and then enough graphical power to be able to have 50-100 enemies/characters at that graphical level on screen at once. basically ps360 level graphics.

the only point to having more powerful systems than the ps3 and 360 is to be able to have tons of characters on screen at once, maybe a little bit better animations, much better AI, keep framerate smooth, faster loading times, a little bit better physics, and subtle effects that makes the game feel like a living world like breeze rustling branches of trees or bushes shaking realistically as you brush by them, or rain slowly turning dirt to mud, etc. Of that list the only thing that actually makes the technical side of graphics any better(something you'd notice in a screenshot) than they are today is being able to push out more characters on screen at once. the other things have to do with making the game environment feel more lush and alive and fluid and also making the AI better. once the next gen hits additional power beyond that is gonna do absolutely nothing to make games any better outside of those two things i just mentioned.

thats a big reason why nintendo was so smart this gen cuz they knew graphics are nearing their functional limit (which they should reach by next gen). so they started working towards advancing interface technology with the wii which along with online community and features, harddrive space, reliability, and software medium are gonna be the only hardware things that matter after next gen.

end of '08 predictions: wii - 43 million,  360 - 25 million, ps3 - 20 million

Games I've beat recently: Super Mario Galaxy, Knights of the Old Republic, Shadow of the Collossus
