Forums - Nintendo - Just started playing Secret of Mana again- did I ruin one of my fav games?

So last night I fired up my SNES and I started Secret of Mana again last night since it has been a good 15 years since I last played it (wow, can't believe its been that long).

I start it and it immediately gets that realyl dated feeling and the OMG it hasn't aged well at all feeling which worried me.  The hit detection was horrible, your buddies pathing was bad, the enemies were annoying, I hated the stairs, I was getting trapped treasure chests just about every time, and I just wasn't having a lot of fun at first.  I didn't remember hating any of these things 15 years ago.

I really had the horrible feeling that I had just ruined one of my favorite games.  ;_;

*BUT* I went ahead and kept playing since my wife was using the other TV to watch her decorating shows and I'm glad I did.  I started getting use to the combat, the menus started feeling a bit better, and I started having a lot of fun.

Yeah, my partner would constantly get stuck, enemies were still annoying, I still constantly got trapped treasure chests, and I still couldn't see armor stats when buyign armor but I was having a lot of fun with the game.  I had completely forgotten how much fun the action part of that game is.

So yeah, no huge point to the story, just glad I started playing Secret of Mana again and glad one of my favorite games wasn't ruined by time.  ^^

Some games really can be timeless fortunately. Did you ever try Secret of Evermore? It was the only game I know of released by Square of America and essentially took Secret of Mana's combat system and then created a new story. I really wish SE would start pumping out rehashes of those two games already so I can play them on my DS.

I bought it on VC and the partners and stairs are annoying but it's still a great game!! espcially if you play with 2 other people...i'm glad you still like it.

At the name of YESHUA, EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth (Philippians 2:10)

I have the biggest Wishlist on VGchartz

Secret of Mana remains awesome to this day. It also remains one of the buggiest games ever made. And yes, your companions are retards who's only use is to cast spells on command.

The not seeing armor stats is new to me, though.

If you are annoyed with those little faults of Secret of Mana, try Secret of Evermore. It fixed everything that was wrong with Mana. It's a much better game in my opinion (ofcourse, Mana is also still great).

Would you recommend it to someone who never played it before? I loved my SNES, I just never owned this game back in the day.

Hell I think I still wanna play it in 50 years.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

If you like good old SNES games then without a doubt.

Yeah, and I've been looking for a cheap copy of Secret of Evermore but the game is usually really expensive so I haven't been able to replace it.  My sister took all our old SNES games which included all the great RPG's on the SNES but one of her kids ruined ALL of them.  ;_;

I felt the same way playing Chrono Trigger but the more I play it the more I'm liking it again.

Oh, just out of random curiousity I looked it up on eBay and it wasn't expensive at all!  I've been itching to play that game again for years so I'll probably get it when I get back from Christmas vacation (I don't like having things shipped to my home so I get things shipped to work).

Now I just have to get Earthbound (which is still expensive ;_;).
