Forums - Nintendo - Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon DS - classes discussion

So, there are 2 sets of classes, see screenshots below (blue arrow indicating promoted path)

I have no experience with Fire Emblem. Yeah, odd, as I tend to play a lot of tatical rpg :)

Which classes are good to have in your party?

I've read that, promoted characters you got along the way are crappy and should alway stick to lowbies and then promote at level 20 to max out stats.

What are your favourite classes? And why?

I've only played the GC and Wii Fire Emblem games, so I can't wait to get this. The best unit is most likely going to be the main character. :P Ike in the Wii FE game can take down the entire game without ever getting hit, and before his first turn.

It's not so much that certain types are always better to have than others, you want to diversify and split your team into smaller groups who should normally travel together. Hide the weaker mages and archers behind your "tanks" and you'll learn how to set up good positioning on the map depending on the situation.

The main question isn't what type of unit you should have, it's which individual person you should have, as that tends to make a way bigger difference. Unit type barely seems to matter in the end as long as you have a diverse lineup (which you will have pretty much no matter what). Just make sure you pick the best characters!

sword masters are always the most fun to use. sending them out alone to defend the south side of the castle, only to have him cricital every single enemy unit is quite enjoyable.

anyways, you're right about the promoted units you get along the way, more often than not, they suck. I just hope there is a black magic user in this game.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is the best Zelda title ever made.

I've FE Wii on my wanted list since forever but never got around to it. Too many games, too little time :)

But if FE DS turns out to be awesome, it might push me to get the Wii version sooner.

I've reading on FE, it seems, your party should have some of everything to counter the enemies.

Axe beats Spear
Spear beats Sword
Sword beats Axe
Bow beats Flying units

Looking at the charts, The promoted units usually gain an extra weapon type which is quite useful for backup outside of your main weapon type.

It seems, mounted units have the least disadvantages. The are better than the walking units in terms of movements. Is not 1-shot-dead against arrows like flying units. A little bit of resistance to stop those spells from killing you. It's not a tank like Knight or General but that defense boost means sacrifice of movements.

Hmmm, reserver 2 spots for horsemen and 2 spots for paladins sounds about right?

A bare minimum of 1 magic offense to hit those physical tanks.

Archer class could be totally skipped since horsemen already handle flying units.

An optional physical tank to put a roadblock on enemies or just use as mage/healer wall.

Okay, I better not look into too much of this stuff or it'll make the game too easy? :)

sword masters

Are they the only units that crit a lot?

I usually never rely on crit for any games since it could make you dead fast if they just... stop crit-ing.

100% kill is better than 50% :)

As far as I know, swordmasters are the only ones who have insane crit levels. They also sport great dodge levels, but god help you if they get hit a few times. They're pretty risky, but they can also be really fun. I'd definitely use them, but I'd never put them in to much danger since one pinch of bad luck could cost you the unit's life, and you'd either have to restart the level or move on without them.

To be honest, I really love the flying units since they can easily pass over obstacles and water, unlike every other unit. It's fairly easy to keep them away from archers anyway, and keep in mind that you can swoop in to attack a unit, and with your leftover move spaces, you can move away after you attack. That works with all mounted units. It should be the same in this game as the other ones I played.

Also keep in mind that archers cannot attack in direct contact with other units unless they have a crossbow (which I've only seen in FE Wii) so if you have your paladin use a bow in his turn, you won't be able to un-equip it after you use it until your next turn, so most of the enemy's units are going to attack your paladin in direct combat and your paladin won't be able to do s*** back to them. It can get a bit frustrating, which is why I rarely ever use bows with my horsemen.

Would you mind continuing this discussion in the official thread? I like this, but we'll get a much better and completer thread if we keep all FESD disccussion in one thread.

You have a point, but some of us don't want to get spoiled by the game before we actually play it. Yeah, I haven't played the original, so I don't want to go reading through that thread and ruin the experience for myself! As of so far, this thread is 100% spoiler free. Now that I think of it, I can see how this thread could turn into a bit of a spoiler pile, but given the nature of his question, and how not much of the basics have really changed in FE, I doubt we'd get particular game spoilers in here, whereas your thread seems more like a free-for-all.

Yeah, no story here, just classes discussion :)
I've already added the charts to other thread, for informational purposes :)
