The fact that he is a Wiiware show that it is a little game, more as a concept game. Do you really think that can be compared with a game like SSBB, who is near the perfection in his style, is the best multi player game on Wii , in addition to having the best content?

Without to mention that this choice would make appear the Wii as a console for small games or concept game only. I doubt they would choose PlaystationStore games for the best PS3 game of the year. Never.

World of Goo isn't a concept game. It started as one but then they released it was actually fun and then made it into a full game (or was that de Blob? I forget). Either way, it is a full game and once again, a large scale does not a good game make.

Even though World of Goo may be small enough to download it's obviously a crapload of fun or else people wouldn't love it so much. You're pretty much saying things like Megaman 9, Portal, Braid, Echnochrome, Flow, and all the other brilliant small or downloadable games out there should be ignored because they had a small budget or just aren't on the same scale.

If what you're saying is true we should really just look at the budget of each game. In that case, I guess some of the best games this gen were MGS4, GTAIV, Halo 3, Haze, Lair, Heavenly Sword, and Too Human. Screw whatever is actually inside of them, those things cost HUGE amounts of money so they're obviously better.

I mean MGS4, that thing has long cut scene after long cut scene and that means more playtime. Awesome game.

GTAIV cost a shit-ton to make and it's open world which means you can play it all day, that's even better than long cut scenes!

And Halo 3 may have a short single play campaign, but it has lots of multiplayer which is even better than a sandbox because you're playing with other people.

And then there's Haze, Lair, Heavenly Sword, and Too Human-- all big budget and if they spent a lot of money on the game that must mean they're good so definitaly some game of the year contenders there. Fuck amazing things like Braid. What good can come out of $180,000? Even though that's a full game, it's really nothing more than a concept right? And Heavenly Sword may have been short, but the production values were so amazing! Definite contender right there.

And why would a WiiWare game mean that only small games should get made? If SSBB had won should everyone only make 4 player fighting games? You should actually think about your reasoning before you type them. If World of Goo winning means we only get creative small scale creative fun games on the Wii then sign me up.

Truth is a good game is simply good regardless of budget or scale. World of Goo is a really good game therefore there's no reason it can't be better than SSBB.

I don't look at the budget of the games. By exemple, i enjoy more playing Tetris that most of the games that you list. However, I admit that I give the award at the title who is extraordinary fun AND who has the best content, the more options and  the best quality overall.

That's why a downloaded title can't win. Even if they are funs and all, there are disc games who are at least as fun as them , but who have the content that they lack.

You're starting to make more sense now. I personally don't agree with you, but at least it's reasonable. I don't think the games are really comparable myself. One has to win and I go with originality over content. And it's better as a single player game.

Tetris is a downloadable title on Wii and 360 (and the downloadable 360 version is even better than the disc version).

Lets assume a fun little situation here:

Tetris DS (easily best version of Tetris) was released on WiiWare and it was actually the first Tetris had been released anytime ever.  Could it win game of the year?

Depends on how much bonus material it had. From his comments a big reason he's giving SSBB the win is all the extra content. I doubt Tetris can squeeze that much out of less than a dozen shapes, especially when your hypothetical scenario removes all the history Tetris claims.

If you take off your fanboy hats and ever listen to these guys talk about videogames you can plainly tell that they think the fanboy wars that take place in trenches like this are retarded and childish.

Quite the opposite.  IGN is on the front lines of the hardcore v casual war.  Just read 2 articles at wii.ign.com, and you'll see how pissed they are about casual games.

Does Matt want to punish Nintendo for their new casual direction?  You can find the answer here:

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)
PC: 10^9
Wii: 10^8

Wow some of the people here sound like they just lost beauty pageant or something. Controversy like this happens often (see bcs this year) but to get so angry over a game winning an award that it has some merit to is just wrong. I mean its one thing if they gave the award to a VC game or something like Carnival Games. That would have been something to b*&ch and whine about. Granted maybe this comes from someone that has played the series since they've come out but I don't see how MK or SSBB would be games of the years because the updates to me are not that much better than AC except for the fact that you could take it online (and thats been done before on the DS for MK){and yes I own all three series' previous versions). The best Mario Kart for me still is the N64 one, especially with the controls, the worst one being the GC one, while SSB can be debated. World of Goo was something that came out and was something fresh not merely trying to build on brand recognition.

I for one am not angry at WoG getting GotY in fact if it means that more developers will go out and try to create interesting games for me to play on wiiware I'm glad that it did. The only thing left will be for Ninty to allow seamless play from the SD card so all our memory storage concerns will be alleviated as I know that I'm down to like 100blocks left and there is still countless things for me to get.

Tetris isn't fun for it's history and it only has a history because it's such a good game.

And Tetris DS doesn't have a lot of bonus content and a game like Geometry Wars 2 or Bomberman Live both have more content than Tetris DS has so it's not like Tetris DS wouldn't be a plausible downloadable game.

When the Wii has both hd and a better storage medium to go along with a bit cheaper price point and some of the rpgs and other games I've read about like the next Zelda, Kizuna, DW X, then I will get one.

Heavens to Murgatoids.

Then you'll never get a Wii BTF, HD graphics are not the point. If you want a Wii it's for it's controls and different games, not for the graphics.

I guess there's too many people that want a Wii anyways, 1 less wont be a problem for Nintendo.

i think tales of symphonia:dawn of a new world should have won the award.

Well I would give the edge to Smash, but dollar for dollar no game on any system this year was a better buy than World of Goo.
