Any game that covers back story with amnesia. Any game that concludes with the main character(s) waking up (SMB2). Any game featuring the same clichés you see in all sorts of writing.

Um, Planescape Torment says Hi! And this one is among the best breed of WRPGs.

That's a great example! I could only think of a few lousy MegaZeux titles. Yeah, great RPG, but the amnesia thing is so trite and reeks of bad sci-fi.

It's bad writing because it's a really cheap way to fill in back story. It requires no thought on the writer's part. They can skip describing the guy's childhood, family life or events before the story because, well, he has *amnesia*. It's also an instant plot twist later in the story (if the writer chooses) when the protagonist finds out he's actually a bad guy, or a major player in an ancient prophecy. Cheap and nasty.

Knights of the Old Republic handled this particular trope excellently, I thought, by setting up the red herring of letting you make your own backstory.

Lost Odyssey handled this pretty well as well with the immortals have lost their memories due to a spell casted on them by Gongora only to slowly get them back as the game progesses.  It also helps that these same immortals have real pasts revealed through cutscenes and the Thousand Years sequences.  I never played The Witcher but I also heard that it handles the "protagonist with amnesia thing" very well since it was done to immerse players.

Mario Bros. 1 hands down... f'n sucked...

Mario Party 6, although my favorite Mario Party, had the worst storyline ever. The sun & moon were having a fight, and somehow Mario thought they would make up if they gave them a bunch of stars... :/

I somewhat agree with KylieDog too, so it's a tie between God of War and MGS4 for me.

God of war has an amazing story..

Also, Kratos gave his soul to the god of war in order for his army to defeat his enemy, and in return he had to do things for the god of war, which ended with his wife and daughter being killed.

Whats so bad about that?

Also about MGS, nothing not even books touch its storyline(and I read alot of books).

This isn't really a thread wherein one is supposed to defend a game's story.

God of War's story only rocks if you compare it to something written by a dead ferret. Kratos was a bloodthirsty warrior and gave his soul to the God of War. The God of War has him kill people. Kratos gets angry because a few of those people happen to be close to him. It reeks of hipocrisy and foolishness. He made a deal with the devil and then blamed the devil for his own stupid decision.

You hardly sound very objective here, because you sound like you've made your mind up about Metal Gear-games before you even play them. If you go into a game and already tell yourself beforehand that the story is epic, chances are you'll block out all of the flaws.

...Ignoring what I said, slandering the Greek tradition of pathos and human folly is kind of silly, too.

Also, on a similar note, Resident Evil as a series has horrible storytelling and backstory crammed so forcefully down it's throat that it's a wonder it hasn't died.

This isn't including RE4, which was blessedly aware of its own campiness and took advantage of that.
