Oblivion was awesome. You want dialogue in an RPG.

AAAAAAARRRGGGGHHH I hate comments like this, cause I really can't decide whether to buy this or not.
A lot of people praise the game and I think the whole idea is great.
I love Mass Effect, but in general I'm not a big fan of WRPGs (big fan of JRPGs).
I didn't like Oblivion, but haven't invested a lot of time in it.
It will probably come down to Fable 2 or Fallout 3.
Help me, I thought I decided to go for Fallout, but now you make me doubt again.
im quite enjoying fallout 3 on ps3, trophy patch and many bugs have been fixed so its gets a nod from me.
the things i dont like about it are, its sometimes to damn hard when loads of super mutants attack you, and you have to keep going into inventory to eat, and when you do eat ur rad levels increase.
i wish the easy setting was much easier
and finally, i always run out of bullets
...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...
PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk
really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

Fallout 3 >>>>>>> Oblivion.
But it is very much a WRPG and not at all similar in feel or playing style to Mass Effect. Mass Effect is much more linear (which is a more JRPG feel) while F3 is an extremely (sometimes aggravatingly) open world.

What didn't you like about Oblivion? Fallout 3 has a lot of similiarities, but improves in virtually every area.
This is my take/comparison on both (I've beaten both..Own ME and will own Fallout when I have the cash).
| Concept: | Mass Effect | Fallout 3 |
| Storyline: |
Awesome, and flawless execution of one of the better sci-fi stories out there. Sidequest storylines are marginal at times
|
Very good, but still lacking in some areas. Much more in-depth for sidequests, as they viably stack up against MQ principles.
|
| Pacing: |
Main quest is friggin' brilliantly paced...Especially once Soverign is involved. Side quests drag pacing down, however.
|
Main quest is decently paced. Not as "OMG" as ME, but the side quests never drag, or detract from the overall pacing of the game.
|
| Voice Acting/Lip Synching | Dialogue is fantastic, but options can be limited at times depending on Paragon/Renegade choices. Voice actors are great.
|
Dialogue the most brilliant I've seen..All choices are available aside from speech (so a good character can tell someone to go F-off and thhen butcher them). Voice actors are fantastic too.
|
| Combat |
Very good, but not as robust as it could of been. Far more 'Gears of War with magic'
|
Best. RPG. Ever. VATS is nothing short of revolutionary for the turn based genre. It perfectly mixes real time shooting, with tactical "how should I attack" strategic approaches.
|
| Side Quests |
Mostly lifeless, and copy & paste. Similar area layouts. I liked it, but I can see where the issue is with it...Very poor rewards due to level scaling.
|
Very robust sidequests. Side quests are every bit as detailed & fun as the mainquest (either a good thing, since SQs are great, or bad since the MQ lacks identity). Actual benefits of sidequests with exclusive loot.
|
|
Game Areas /Game World |
Brilliant main quest worlds with tons of detail and life. Side quest planets are pretty generic and look like they were procedurally generated by a turd.
|
Very good design worlds throughout. World is bland as a design choice due to nuclear Fallout. Great level/game area design, as all feature smart designs.
|
| Technical/Glitches |
Frame rate drops persist throughout, but is for the most part, stable.
|
No frame rate drops that I can remember..Buttery smooth. But there are massive glitches in some areas, and can break the game at times.
|
| SFX/Musical Score |
Near flawless for a sci-fi soundtrack. Very atmospheric.
|
...Different. Most of the soundtrack isn't based off of a score, but in-world principles such as radio stations and the like. Very enjoyable, and the soundtrack that is there is very good.
|
| IMO: | 9.25/10. Brilliant must-play WRPG that executes on so many levels. Technical side & sidequests prevent it from being 'the' RPG of the decade. Have 2 full playthroughs completed & have a 3rd one on Insane. | 9.5. Flawless. Outside of glitches and so-so MQ, it's head & shoulders above Oblivion. Played the game non-stop for a full week, racking up 50+hrs on my first playthrough..Better role-playing aspects than ME, and a better combat system sets it slightly above ME. |
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
| epinefridis said: #1 You talk about the first hours and the tutorials apparently. Dude, keep playing. You can play dozens of hours in this game without sayin a word. I will keep playing, I ran into this same problem with Oblivion and later found that I enjoyed the exploration aspect of the game. It is just that it doesn't seem the same will happen this time around. #2 You spent all your life in a Vault and you want to know in the first 2 hours of your earthly life where to go exactly??? O.O! It isn't like that, but when I have trouble walking around a town and either keep going in circles or coming to dead ends, I am not having fun. #3 It's a meta apocalyptic, post nuclear destruction world. What did you expect? A littel more than just grey. Hopefully I adjust. #4 No comment here. You'll find weapons that will blow your head off. No need, I started with Agi, Int and Luck at 9 so my critical chance was high. I was blowing heads off when I was still in the Vault. #5 Exactly as in Oblivion. Story's kinda weak, but the atmosphere and the narrative background is top. I play my games for story above all else, I knew Oblivions was weak but some said this was better. That is why I guess I caved in a got it. My comment: I think you spent more time on actually writing this OP than you played the game itself. Need to tell something else? I am sorry my opinion may differ from yours, but there is no need to think I am not actually playing the game and trying to call me out on it. |
iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.
Currently playing:
Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

@Mrstick
I think your being a bit harsh on mass effects side quest. Yes some were weak like the scanning ones but there are the taking back the moon base, Destroying the spaceship infected with the spider things and the assassination job. I would put it more at a 7 then a 5 but then again it is my second favorite game on my 360 behind ToV...
