Forums - Sales - Real measure of Console Strength

Here's what the 50th selling game of each of the currently sold consoles did last week according to VGCharts...

DS---- 36,283

Wii---- 29,852

X360- 29,102

PS3--- 18,967

PS2--- 5,619

PSP--- 3,509

IMO, I think this elimates the distortion caused by pack-ins & new releases on the charts and is a real measure of a console's ability to sell a breadth of software. That's what publishers look at (since very few games have a chance of being best selling) and what retailers go by in allocating shelf space.

It looks like 2009 is going to be the last year of PS2 & PSP viability. Sony is going to have to work hard to protect it's retail turf.

Last week, the 50th best selling game sold 36,283. 50th best Wii game sold 29,852 etc...

Actually, this month is terrible for these estimates with so many promotions pushing the shovelware up the charts.

Currently playing on PS3: God of War III

Currently playing on Xbox360: Final Fantasy XIII

Currently playing on NDS: Chrono Trigger

sales revenue figures / promotions?

That's still shocking to see the 50th best ps2 game beat the 50th best psp game considering the sales of psp itself aren't exactly that bad. Its sad to see myself, as I got my psp second hand and in the short time I've bought a heck of a lot more games than my friend did the entire time he had it, and its a original model psp. It would be interesting to see an analysis of the data for a longer period of time (like the entire year of 2008) just to see a comparison. Maybe someone can do an article :P

This is a really odd way of doing it.

Your PsP/Ps2 conclusion doesn't make sense. The PsP/Ps2 is already getting less games. This means that the 50th place will be lower than what a new game can expect.

The X360 vs Wii/DS is also flawed, as if you looked at the sales of the year so far, you'll see that 360's 50th title has a higher total sales than Wii/DS (edit: checked, about equal. 100K higher on X360 for Americas, 50K lower for Others, and 10K lower for Japan).

Essentially, you're using anedoctal data, and even if this was respective for everything, it would still be flawed.

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS

What he means is that chains like Game Stop will reduce the sections that house PS2/P games, and give more space to the games that sell like the Wii or the 360, or the DS.

The stores are not interested in helping one console over another, they just want to sell the most amount of product as possible.

Though I know that EB games(a Canadian chain now owned by game Stop) is almost removing its new PS2 section altogether as sales have been low, and the PSP section is already smaller than that.

The PsP and the DS sections are about the same size at the moment, but there has been talk about increasing the size of the DS section, as the sales have been stellar.
