Forums - Sales Discussion - Disgaea 3 outsells ToV in America

Niche SJRPG on a small user base > JPRG on a bigger base ????????

Thats weird,, so RPG fans are really sticking with the PS3 !!!!

Currently Playing: Final Fantasy XIII (PS3), White Knight Chronicles (PS3), PES 2010 (PS3), Killzone 2 (PS3)

Games to Finish: Silent hill Homecoming (PS3), Valkyria Chronicles (PS3), Oblivion (PS3)

Well, I'd say this pretty much proves that JRPG fans have not migrated to the 360. While I don't think Tales titles are in any way better than the Disgaea series, they tend to sell more copies, that's for sure. I think it's crazy that Tales of Vesperia hasn't outsold Disgaea 3. Let's hope some of those American Disgaea fans start picking up Valkyria Chronicles as that game needs some serious support. I want to see some sequels and it looks like we might not get one at this point with how pathetic sales are.

Well, both game flopped.

No body "Seems" to like (J)RPG's anymore, there all switching to western style. *cough* Bioshock/Fallout 3 *cough*

Despite the love they get on the forums, JRPGs have always been a very small market in the West (which is why so many of them never make it over). Final Fantasy is big here, but it's about the only one. Even Tales of only has one game that did really well in the West (Symphonia). The almighty Dragon Quest is also met with indifference out here.

That's not entirely true. Because of the gigantic success of Final Fantasy VII on the PSOne, JRPGs that never came out here before started to get ported to the US. Throughout the lifespan of both the PSOne and the PS2, JRPGs have done quite well in America. It's only this generation where they've started to do rather poorly again.

Heck, Persona 3 has sold 380k copies in the US. JRPGs definitely have an audience here. I think the real problem is that so many of the JRPGs released so far in this generation have been on a console that people associate only with Western games. There's also the issue that the JRPGs released for this current generation of consoles haven't been all that great. When more great JRPGs start showing up again, I imagine they'll start selling well again.

I guess I did overstate my case a bit. I retract that. Still, I maintain that the genre's popularity on internet forums is very disproportionate to its popularity at retail. Enough JRPGs do well enough out here, but the only really big one has been Final Fantasy, even on the PlayStation and PS2.

Would you agree that that's more accurate?

Why was Vesperia's last sales update on October 1st?

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

I can pretty much guarantee that SO4 and WKC will be the first million selling JRPGs.  The former because SO3 sold over a million copies and the latter just because of the buzz surrounding the game.  Just hope that they don't get released in the West too close to each other.  If atleast one of them sell a million copies, then I get to gloat.

That is not the last time the game's sales have been updated, but instead the last time the game's webpage was updated with someone adding in new information or screenshots.

You can...if they sell a million in the West (gotta stick to my thesis ).

I'm confident that won't be the case. Wanna make this more interesting, though?

Selling a million copies in the West alone?  You do realize that a good chuck of those games' sales come from Japan.  I just mean a million copies WW, not in the West alone.
