Forums - Sales Discussion - An Answer to DMeisterJ: Why I Take Sales Figures Personally

Look: loving graphics is easy.  We all have eyes, and in order to use them, you just have to keep them open.  Graphics are just one part of an overall game experience.  I believe that graphics are as important as they are to some because graphics whores are unable to appreciate other parts of gameplay.  They're the same people who can't stand foreign films due to subtitles, or older films with sub-par special effects by today's standards, or usually books at all.  They're the ones who never get to know what a woman's like because they can't see beyond her cup-size.  Their minds just aren't sophisticated enough to allow them to get past the glaringly obvious and superficial.

Graphics Matter!

This is coming from a guy who still plays Civilization I, thats old school.  Seems contradictory, doesnt it?  Well it isn't, because when I am looking for a gaming experience that involves strategy, puzzles, some RPGs or basically games that make me think, I am not looking for graphics as much as I am looking for gameplay.

However, when it comes to FPS games that are suppose to put me in the shoes of a World War II soldier, the graphics need to be realistic.

Nutter! Don't you realize that the cultural boundaries are prettier in Civ IV? I bet Civ I couldn't even render pretty cultural boundaries in its game engine. Actually I find Civ IV to be the best, because its graphics are better than Civ III! Jk, I find that the even numbered series are really just perfecting the gameplay elements introduced in the odd numbered games. So Civ II for me is just a better Civ I and Civ IV is just a better Civ III.

We're hijacking here, but I prefer IV to the others, after Beyond the Sword came out. Before that, though, II was king.

@soriku: sometime in November. He was vague on the details.

Yeah, beyond the sword really made me play the game! I didin't like how the game becomes so difficult to win when you try to expand by conquest at first, so it really means you have to use diplomacy and subterfuge. The games harder but im playing at Monarch level right now because it really entices me to try new things to pull out a victory. You have to be proactive, unlike a lot of turn based games where you can mindlessly click move, attack, build, end turn. That Apostolic palace is probably the single biggest addition to the game. The diplomatic options it gives you are INSANE.

Link to where he said he sold it?

It's on my wall somewhere. He probably talked about it on a thread too. Meh.

@Squillam: Tell me about it! Suddenly, the AI's willing to wheel and deal, and if you piss off your neighbors they'll act as one against you (or against each other, if you play it right...). I know there are probably games with better AI out there, but I'm still damned impressed, even after all this time. And it's always fun hamstringing (or saving) factions using the Palace.

If only Total War hired BtS' AI team...
