Forums - Gaming - Atari's new Game Plan. Getting Serious.

I rememeber when Pong came out - I used to play it hours with friends.

From Cryptic Studios:  "Champion Online", "Star Trek Online"

Atari will focus more on MMO games:    It's a good idea.

Games based on movies:  Ghosters, Chronicles of Riddick:   Movie games don't do well and I was not impressed with "Ghostbusters" trailer.

"Witcher" looks good but I don't know how well it will sell.  I'm not a fan of RPG so I'm not excited about this one at all.

I guess only game that excites me is "Ready to Rumble" on Wii.  A good boxing game on Wii will be awesome.

Overall, I like the way Atari is planning but i don't think they will succeed much.

Good luck Atari -

Ready to Rumble.. I guess they're trying to compete with Punch-Out

Pixel Art can be fun.

Ghostbusters is absolutely not based on a movie, it's it own story (essentially Ghostbusters 3).

-edit-

And I'm not upset you're not excited about Ghostbusters, I'd obviously love it if everyone loves the game but can't please everybody, just saying the things that normally plague movie games have nothing to do with Ghostbusters: the Videogame.

I don't know about Star Trek but Champions is supposed to be mainly a console MMO so it has a chance.  They also have the benefit of it's not a fantasy MMO like WoW.

That's assuming console MMOs even succeed at all, it's relatively untested waters.  Also it still has competition from DC Online and City of Heroes but not WoW, at least not directly.

Yeah, I'm not sold on MMOs as a business model unless they're like Maplestory or Guild Wars.   WoW is too dominating and people aren't too eager to shell out a monthly fee unless it's truly addictive gameplay.

I don't know about DC Heroes but CoH isn't on consoles so Champions has that going for it above all else.  Also, FFXI is on the PS2, PC and 360 (came out in that order) and has done well enough.

And WoW is losing steam.  Wrath of the Lich King helped pick up a lot of that steam but you can't expect it to stay forever.  Before WotLK was released they were doing all sorts of desperate things to get people back in the game (most of them successful even) but the game can't last forever.  People are getting burned out more and more quickly.

Don't take this as doom and gloom for WoW by the way since it still has a lot of life left, I'm just saying in the coming years it will keep losing steam and people will eventually grow tired of it.

Time for some EQ3.... haha... I find Champions to be interesting City of Hero's was one of my fav MMOs
