Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo files patent for motion control portable

I think it would be interesting if they moved to an online only distribution. They could still sell games to retailers, by selling cards like the Wii points card. But instead of points, the cards would represent games. This would eliminate the need for any type of media and make the device more like an iPod.

I can just imagine the stares people playing these things will get in public. They will look like they are brain-damaged or something as they flop their handheld around wildly.

In any case, this could be really cool if Nintendo ever decides to go through with building a handheld like this, especially if they move away from cartridges in their next iteration.

I'd be surprised if they move away from cartridges (read: flash memory) for numerous reasons. Firstly, since the only other options involve moving parts, that reduces battery life. Secondly, rapid console motion + moving disc probably isn't the best idea (I could be wrong, How does the PSP do under rapid movements?). Thridly, while you could get extra space on an optical disc, DS devs don't seem to have any major problems with the current limited capacities. Very few games even come near the 128meg mark and rumours have it that a 256mb game is on the horizon which means that the 128mb 'limit' perhaps isn't so. Assumably the next generation of DS will also not push the boundaries of graphical power, so less space is required anyhow.

Cartirdges IMO is the primary reason why the DS is superior to the PSP. With advances to cart memory, I'm hoping they have the balls to switch back to carts for their next console (maybe the next handheld will also be a console, so it won't matter!).

And once devices go online more readily, storage space will be less of an issue. Allow a 4Gig USB flash key to be used as storage memory, and you are set.

Unless Sony have the balls to drop disc-based media from their next handheld, they will not be able to compete.

WTH @Takashii's sig.

LOL...DonWii I just wanted to prove to everyone that I'm neutral..I love all consoles...I have that 360 in my name because I can choose to go 360 degrees and pick whichever console I like...I see the Xbox 360...I like do a 360 degree and see the Wii do a 360 degree...see the PS3 do a 360 degree....thats all..I'm no fanboy..I see what I like and purchase it...I have the Kaz Hirai, Nintendo prints money, Wii and Xbox 360 all to say that I'm not a fanboy..thats all..

Digital distribution is completely obvious for the next handheld IMO.

What I am curious about - it whether they need a new handheld at all, or whether they can just release some simple add-on for the DS to allow all of this.

Re: this motion control - it would be pretty easy to create a housing that a DSLite could "plug into" (via the GBA port) to provide full motion control.

I really can't see if being that useful - as long as the screen is attached to the device itself. If it is used as a "Wiimote" for the Wii, or connected straight to another TV/display device... that has potential.

(its hard to look at a screen, that you are moving/twisting)

Shams sorry, but I think that statement was pretty stupid, the only reason why the ds is actually surpassing the psp is becuase it has games and it looks better, before the ds lite the psp was outselling the ds 2 to 1.

@Takashii360 You are Nintendo biased, because you have Wii/DS/ Xbox360/Sony. 50% of your pictures are for 1 company. 25% of your pictures are for 3 products. You loose.

Whatever DonWii...I not going to get into a flame war with you...like I said I'm neutral say what you say...its your opinion...think mature not immature...I pick what I want and I say what I want..I said I'm neutral..I'm neutarl..you think I'm Nintendo biased so be it..whatever makes you happy...

Well the reason I put (read: flash memory) in my post is to imply that the cartridge could possibly not be the actual method of getting the game onto the device. There are already plenty of devices that include flash storage, so with an internet connection (or perhaps a download station in store) you could get your games that way. As you've said, allow expandable memory ((mirco/mini)sdhc perhaps, that allows up to 32gb and is tiny) then you've got plenty of space.

@your mother, true, while I didn't think of more parts to break directly, the fact that you have a spinning disc in a rapidly moving device would definitely cause significantly more wear and tear, plus the possibility of damaging the disc.

Ok... I didn't think I would have to apply the new rule, but you leave me no choice:

Sarcasm goes in Pink. You sucked all the fun out of it.

from the picture, they are bring back the gameboy, with motion sensing. So the whole touch-pad thing will be killed off by it's own creator... kinda stupid if thats what happens.
