I can just imagine the stares people playing these things will get in public. They will look like they are brain-damaged or something as they flop their handheld around wildly.

In any case, this could be really cool if Nintendo ever decides to go through with building a handheld like this, especially if they move away from cartridges in their next iteration.

I'd be surprised if they move away from cartridges (read: flash memory) for numerous reasons. Firstly, since the only other options involve moving parts, that reduces battery life. Secondly, rapid console motion + moving disc probably isn't the best idea (I could be wrong, How does the PSP do under rapid movements?). Thridly, while you could get extra space on an optical disc, DS devs don't seem to have any major problems with the current limited capacities. Very few games even come near the 128meg mark and rumours have it that a 256mb game is on the horizon which means that the 128mb 'limit' perhaps isn't so. Assumably the next generation of DS will also not push the boundaries of graphical power, so less space is required anyhow.

Cartirdges IMO is the primary reason why the DS is superior to the PSP. With advances to cart memory, I'm hoping they have the balls to switch back to carts for their next console (maybe the next handheld will also be a console, so it won't matter!).

And once devices go online more readily, storage space will be less of an issue. Allow a 4Gig USB flash key to be used as storage memory, and you are set.

Unless Sony have the balls to drop disc-based media from their next handheld, they will not be able to compete.

Well the reason I put (read: flash memory) in my post is to imply that the cartridge could possibly not be the actual method of getting the game onto the device. There are already plenty of devices that include flash storage, so with an internet connection (or perhaps a download station in store) you could get your games that way. As you've said, allow expandable memory ((mirco/mini)sdhc perhaps, that allows up to 32gb and is tiny) then you've got plenty of space.

@your mother, true, while I didn't think of more parts to break directly, the fact that you have a spinning disc in a rapidly moving device would definitely cause significantly more wear and tear, plus the possibility of damaging the disc.
