Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo files patent for motion control portable

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/nintendo/nintendo-patent-hints-at-wii-portable-286606.php

"A game system includes a housing to be held by a player. The housing incorporates an XY-axis acceleration sensor to detect an acceleration in an X-axis and Y-axis direction and a Z-axis contact switch to detect an acceleration in a Z-axis direction. These sensor and switch detect at least one of an amount (e.g. tilt amount, movement amount, impact amount or the like) and a direction (e.g. tilt direction, movement direction, impact direction or the like) of a change applied to the housing. A simulation program provides simulation such that a state of a game space is changed related to at least one of the amount and direction of the change applied to the housing."

Isnt the micro motion sensitive atleast a yoshi game or sometin?

mM

Whether or not they plan to build one or not it makes sense to patent it early for fear of patent trolls ...

There are GBA carts that have motion sensors but none of their systems are motion sensitive by default

WOW Nintendo is just coming up with all these new gadgets...they have the money though to make these new things....O_O

WTH @Takashii's sig.

I can just imagine the stares people playing these things will get in public. They will look like they are brain-damaged or something as they flop their handheld around wildly.

In any case, this could be really cool if Nintendo ever decides to go through with building a handheld like this, especially if they move away from cartridges in their next iteration.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

 I'd be surprised if they move away from cartridges (read: flash memory) for numerous reasons. Firstly, since the only other options involve moving parts, that reduces battery life. Secondly, rapid console motion + moving disc probably isn't the best idea (I could be wrong, How does the PSP do under rapid movements?). Thridly, while you could get extra space on an optical disc, DS devs don't seem to have any major problems with the current limited capacities. Very few games even come near the 128meg mark and rumours have it that a 256mb game is on the horizon which means that the 128mb 'limit' perhaps isn't so. Assumably the next generation of DS will also not push the boundaries of graphical power, so less space is required anyhow.

@akuma
if nintendo are planning on having shaky movements in games it wouldnt be a good idea to move to disc format... twould have to have the best jog-proofing ever.

You're forgetting the fourth reason, and for me the most important: Moving parts means things break. Solid state devices lack moving parts and tend to last longer and are less susceptible to shock. These are prime design features that should be considered when designing a portable device - and more so given the wear and tear, use and abuse of handheld consoles.
