How many units does a game have to sell on the PS2 to get platinum?

To answer my own question: Nobody exactly knows the requirements, seeing that everyone who responded to this question said something different.

Most likely Bodhesatva's answer is the correct one.

http://scea.com/News/PressReleases/13

To be included in the PlayStation 2 "Greatest Hits" series, a title must meet two key criteria: sales must be in excess of 400,000 units and the title must have been on the market for more than nine months. Initial offerings from Sony Computer Entertainment America will include such titles as ATV Offroad Fury™, Gran Turismo™ 3 A-spec, Twisted Metal:Black™, Dark Cloud™. These four titles have become bona fide hits on PlayStation 2 with combined unit sales of more than 2.8 million.

Unfortunately the SCEE press release doesn't state the exact amount. Though I was wrong on worldwide. Whatever site said that much have meant over all PAL teritories.

To cash in my CC rewards points for $300 in Circuit City gift cards to purchase a 360 or not: That is the question.

Greatest Hits in the U.S

"When Sony introduced the program for PlayStation in 1997, games could become GH titles after selling at least 150,000 copies and being on the market for at least a year.[1] Minimum sales required eventually rose to 250,000.[2] When the program came to PlayStation 2 in 2002, games could become GH titles after selling at least 400,000 copies and being on the market for at least 9 months.[3] Suggested retail prices of GH titles at first were dropped to $24.99, but they now typically retail for $19.99. Third-party publishers, however, can set their own GH prices and are not required to make their games GH titles after passing the minimums. Games that are multi-million sellers may become GH titles much later than 9 months to maximize profits.

In 2006, Sony extended the Greatest Hits program to the PlayStation Portable. [4] To qualify, a title must be on the market for at least 9 months and have sold 250,000 copies or more."

Platinum range in PAL Territories

"The Platinum Range is a Sony PlayStation budget range in the PAL regions, including the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and continental Europe. A similar budget range in the U.S. market is known as the Greatest Hits label.

To become a Platinum release it was required that a game have over 600,000 total worldwide sales after generally one year on the market (PAL region sales in particular; games that sell over 600,000 units in another region alone, such as Japan or the U.S., do not necessarily qualify for a Platinum title).

After reaching the required level of sales, Sony often dropped the prices of the original title to Platinum pricing levels (generally about half of the original retail price), as a way to clear inventory for retailers.

The Platinum distinction has since been extended to the PlayStation 2 era and PSP era."

Ultimate Hits in Japan

Square Enix games are usually given Ultimate Hits status once they hit 600K-750K in retail.

Erm....you might want to read the thread Leo-J. This thread has nothing to do with Final Fantasy.
