I simply offer this up as a theory for discussion.  This is not meant to inflame either side.  Let's set the Wii aside for a moment and talk about the HD consoles.  The point I wish to make is that I believe that a significant portion of the sales difference between 360 and PS3 may not be due any differences in the game libraries, but due to people who only have a SDTV.  Let me explain.  Part of what may or may not justify the price of the PS3 is the inclusion of a Blu-ray player.  This is a great value......to someone who has a HDTV.  However, for someone who wants next-gen games and only has SDTV, the Blu-ray player is of no value except as a forward thinking purchase.  I propose that SDTV owners primarily choose the cheaper 360 because of this.  I believe that these SDTV owners make up a large portion of the sales difference between the consoles.  Your thoughts?

i have SDTV right now and looking to buy HDTV soon, the TV will cost me about £600 i dont think i would splash another £300 on a console, after spending £600 on a TV when i can get xbox for half that price, i am not interested in Blu-ray movies btw.

I don't want to turn this into a "merits of Blu-ray" thread, but let me just say that I have a really hard time looking at my SD DVDs anymore since I got Blu-ray.  However, I admit that the appeal of Blu-ray depends on how much you are really into movies.  That's a discussion for a different thread.

i only added the blu-ray bit to let people know it is not one the main features i am looking for in a video game that is all, and as you said that is for another thread :)

it all comes down to price for me, because the TV will cost me alot, i will still buy PS3 one day when i feel like it

Well considering HD TV adoption rates continue to increase, we might also see ps3sales go up?

I don't think there is much of an effect caused by HDTV ownership.

Technophiles will probably own all the bells and whistles, so they usually have enough money and own all the consoles already.

Gamers probably don't care if they have all the correct equipment, so they most likely just own the console/consoles of their own preferences (fanboy of systems or games will decide choice) regardless of a TV type.

Everyone else that purchases VG systems, without sounding demeaning, these customers will purchase a system through word of mouth, brand recognition, peer pressure, etc. These customers for most reasons have little to no reason to perform extra setup/purchasing additional cables/settings tweaks/etc. to actually utilize an HDTV anyways, since I've seen much confusion about this where many people play both PS3's and 360's on HDTVs in SD.

In this group, unless someone is a fanboy of a particular system, I don't see HDTV adoption affecting video game purchases.
