| Kyros said: And if we discount Wii Sports and Wii Play (which is in effect a 10$ game with the second WiiMote) we have 5 out of the top10, which is perfectly in line with its marketshare. But thats not the point. The problem of the Wii lies below the Top10. While the 360 and the PS3 have a long long list of really good games, the Wii has a couple of (Nintendo produced) Blockbusters and a huge amount of not so good titles. The middle is missing. Discussion is not new. |
I tried to cover this by providing a top 10 breakdown for each platform, but since you insist... Here's a full top 25 for all consoles:
All Consoles
-) Wii Sports (17.45m)
1) Mario Kart Wii (10.43m)
2) Wii Fit (10.37m)
3) Wii Play (7.82m)
4) Smash Brothers Brawl (7.49m)
5) Grand Theft Auto 4 (360) (6.31m)
6) Grand Theft Auto 4 (PS3) (4.97m)
7) Metal Gear Solid 4 (3.54m)
8) Gears of War 2 (3.31m)
9) Mario and Sonic (3.30m)
10) Mario Galaxy (2.66m)
11) Call of Duty 4 (360) (2.53m)
12) Call of Duty World at War (360) (2.37m)
13) Grand Turismo 5 Prologue (2.20m)
14) Guitar Hero III (Wii) (2.12m)
15) Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (360) (1.84m)
16) Call of Duty 4 (PS3) (1.84m)
17) Fable 2 (1.80m)
18) Carnival Games (1.74m)
19) Guitar Hero III (360) (1.66m)
20) Link's Crossbow Training (1.65m)
21) Mario Party 8 (1.63m)
22) Halo 3 (1.54m)
23) Army of Two (360) (1.49m)
24) Madden 09 (360) (1.46m)
25) Game Party (1.42m)
11 Wii, 10 360, and 4 PS3 games show up (this is still not counting Wii Sports). So Kyros is partially correct, as the Wii is indeed less dominant in the 11-25 spots - although one would think it's better to dominate the top of the list rather than the middle part. Nevertheless, the Wii not only puts every single game from its top 10 into the list, I had to go research what was next in 2008 sales (Midway's much-decried Game Party, if you would believe it).
Here's the real kicker though: every single Wii game other than Guitar Hero is exclusive to the platform. Only three of the 360's ten games on this list are exclusive. Basically, if you want to play ANY of the Wii's top selling games, you must own the console. This is an extraordinary selling point for the console; often we hear that the Wii's differentiation is bad because it makes porting 360/PS3 games more difficult. But in reality, the opposite is true: the Wii's different nature makes all of its top games exclusive to the platform, driving hardware sales through the roof. The conventional logic is precisely backwards.
Every long-time gamer knows that exclusive games are what sell hardware. Just look at this list above: despite all the blockbuster games that have come out this generation, 17 of the top 25 (and 8 of the top 10!) selling games in 2008 were exclusives to one platform or another. And it's really even more dominant than that, since we see 2 Grand Theft Autos, 2 Call of Duties, and 2 Guitar Heros showing up in the data.
You can literally boil the console generation down to exclusive software sales. Wii is selling it far better than its competitors, thus is winning. Personal opinions of that software (i.e. thx1139's posts) are completely irrelevant.
End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)
