Blu Ray retail price is some kind of bad joke.

Sainsbury's North London ENGLAND this evening.

Hancock DVD 9.97 GBP
Hancock BluRay 19.97 GBP

This is ludicrous.....the price difference is so large only a fool would buy the Blu Ray version.

Still you know what they say about a fool and his money.

or someone who wants a good quality picture while watching a movie. BTW there must be millions of fools.

Is the improvement worth paying twice the price of DVD ?

Whoever wrote this article needs to shut up.. I'd rather watch VHS/beta movies rather than read that eyesore article.

Yes, how dare he express his opinion!

It's not worded as opinion, it's worded as solid facts. IMO it's garbage though. He better be right: "Blu-ray is in a death spiral" or else IMO he's just as bad as many of the loudmouth 360 fanboys talking about PS3 vs 360 technicals.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

DVD started the same way. Everyone said I was crazy when I was buying DVDs for $30 a pop and they were picking up VHS. Now I really was crazy when I was paying more than that for LaserDiscs. They were awesome, but made my bank account cry.

Only a fool would buy a DVD if they have a Blu-ray player.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

I simply look for bargains on BD discs. A local chain retailer has a buy 2 get one free offer. I got that. So suddenly I have 6 new BD discs for the price of 4. Saying that, it's still more to buy but at times, at least it gets competitive. It ended up costing me $21AU each (about $15US). And another thing, probably 95% of all BD discs thus far are region free so if your currency is good (mine is crap being the south pacific ruble, aka Aussie dollar) then you can get them from places like Amazon, sometimes a lot cheaper.

"Paying twice the price" is relative.  But $10 more for HD video AND sound, yes if this is your movie.  It's at least worth renting at about the same price.  But your example isn't the greatest since the 2 disc DVD version and the 2 disc Blu-ray version (the only Blu-ray version) is only a $5 SMRP difference.

My wife is a Stargate fan.  She just bought the original movie uncut edition for just $10 Blu-ray.  Let's say she can find it at $4 on DVD.  Sure, she'd be saving $6, but she wouldn't be getting what she wanted.  That's wasting $4 on a DVD when it's $10 well spent on Blu-ray.  And who's to argue to spend $10 on an HD movie that you want and can afford?  Choices.
