Forums - Sony - Blu-ray: A 2008 Holiday Hit?

Not really.

I still own all the DVDs that I had in the '90s. They play with the exact same quality they had when they were new. Can I say the same about every VHS that I had for the same amount of time? Hardly. With DVDs, I can jump to any scene I want to, whenever I want to. I can put the DVD in and immediately start the movie - no need to rewind, sit through previews, or anything of the sort. DVDs include a hundred extra features, dozens of extra options.

BD only includes higher-quality versions of everything DVD has.

I agree, but you still wouldn't call Blu-ray unecessary would you? That what I was sarcastic about NM's post before.

End of 2009 ltd sales:

Wii = 67-68m

X360 = 38-39m

PS3 = 34-35m

Prediction: The PS3 will surpass the 360 on weekly sales after it drops to $299 on all regular weeks (no big releases).

Of course not. Like I said, I think his reaction's ridiculous.

What I'm saying is just that BD isn't good enough to be a full-scale successor to DVD. I still know a ton of people that actually prefer their VHS tapes over DVD, even though DVD is a tremendous step up from VHS. With that said, there are an enormous number of people that will prefer DVD over BD, likely permanently.

BD isn't unnecessary. And it isn't ridiculous, like Nintendoman makes it out to be. But it's not good enough to actually overtake DVD. That tech is yet to come.

It's more like this - VHS is the horse-and-buggy, DVD is the family automobile. BD is the luxury automobile - doesn't really offer much that the family car doesn't have; just makes the ride a heck of a lot nicer... but at a cost.

Cadillacs haven't stopped Accords and Elantras from selling well, after all. But you definitely don't see (many) horse-drawn buggies out on the roads anymore.

For a true successor to the Elantra-class car, we're going to need a flying vehicle. Not a Cadillac.

Damn cars! I hope the automobile industry rots in hell.

Very nice to here. Blu-ray is here to stay, and movies, games, and personal storge are the better because of it.

I never got into DVD. Even to this day I only have 7. Someone in this thread hates me, because when DVD came out my family had a 1080i TV, and shortly after a 42in 720p Sharp. DVD has been a joke since it came out, and I have been waiting for a long time for a disc format that looked like it was built for the future. Blu-ray already supports the highest definition of TV's on the market, and as mentioned above it has room to support future formats with little to no cost added. That is the nice thing about Blu-ray. In ten years from now they can UHD Blu-ray players and the tech will be nearly mainstream prices day 1.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

You have the ability to travel time? Awesome.

Might want to get your timelines straight there, chief. DVD was released in 1996, almost two years before the first HDTVs were sold in America. How do I know this? I had a ticket to the release in San Diego. It was a pretty big deal... and I already owned a DVD player. It's how I got the ticket. Early adopter, all that jazz.

@ taxman. Norway and Sweden have the right idea then.

Blu Ray only brings better sound/picture. Nothing else. Nothing. DVD's are still fine. And getting one season of a tv show on one disc is only convenient if you are too weak and flabby to change discs. Blu Ray, more like ass ray. I hope it rots in hell. Along with rich people. I also highly doubt any poor people have HDTV's. I had hoped this recession would kill off Blu Ray & HD but alas.

First of all, blu-ray also can't be scratched (unlike DVDs and HD-dvds), and they also have a lot more space.

Secondly, what the hell do you have against rich people?  Are you at a library to get online?  You aren't that poor...

Well, in correction, Blu-rays can be scratched, they have a protective coating and are just harder to scratch in theory (I say in theory, because I haven't tried to scratch one of my $30 Blu-rays to make sure)

As for your second comment, spot on.

Blu Ray brings my piss to a boil. Firstly its expensive and second you need a HDTV to actually benfit from the improved picture quality. What a load of ass suckage. People without HDTV's should get the pic quality or no-one should.

@Zlejedi, I actually do have serious sight problems

@konnichiwa, yes i am, wtf were ronaldo rooney et al doing

Blu Ray is the preserve of rich people and I detest rich people. As far as I am concerned if you can afford Blu Ray you have too much money. You should be forced to give some to poor people.

You sir, are awesome.  Remember that, when we can stream movies directly to our Wiis, Blu-Ray will become obsolete practically overnight!  All those with bad eyesight rejoice!

Viva la Wii-volution!
