Lets assume the true sales figures are 770.000 Wii and 510.000 360....what would you expect from a guy wearing a Wii shirt and running a site for sales figures?

 Umm accurate numbers?

I remember the days when this site started. There were three bars representing the market-share of Wii, 360 and PS3 respectively. Once I took a ruler and measured if the bars truly fit to the numbers they should represent. The result of this was that the Wii bar was considerably longer than it should have been relating on the numbers. Now....its not so important if it was 1.2 or 1.4 times as long as it should have been. What was important to me was THAT it was longer.

First off, the source doesn't put the numbers up. ioi does, and he doesn't wear a Wii shirt, and he loves racing and owns a PS3 and GT5:P, so I don't understand how much crap you can spew when you've been here since the "site started"

also, ioi isn't the greatest at web programming, so who gives a rip if his code for making the bars the right lenght didn't work properly.

oh, if by when the site first started you mean vgcharts.org, it didn't even have bars for Wii sales since it exsisted long before the Wii went on sale.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Hey!

PS3 is up YOY.

I'm happy.

Keep your expectations that low and you'll always be happy.

Everything is up YOY.

BUT. 360 is up YOY Because of Price cut, Wii is up because better Supply. PS3 is up without price drop (Which is amazing considering credit crunch) .

I'm certain now that the magic time for a price cut is right before Christmas.

I'm also fairly sure that Sony doesn't realize that, and instead will cut its prices next year in March, and then wait for 2010.

Since we're stating hunches, there's mine.

You mean like how they cut it last year In November? Of course they realise, but will drop the price in March before 360 gains more ground (They have no choice)

OT: Wow @ DS/Wii/360

...

PS3 is doing ok vs last year, but the spectacular increase of the 360 is making it look really really bad..... (try this stat: the 360's YoY increase is 9 times the PS3s.... incredible) Wonder if Sony will drop the price.... If I were them, I wouldn't bother. I mean, they should break 20 million without too much trouble by the end of the year, which is more than enough to ensure a good level of support from 3rd parties. If they start seeing massive decreases in YoY sales though, then they definitely should drop the price.

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

@drkohler

Usually the company paid for those spot. The reason PS3 is where they are is because Sony paid to be in that particular spot. This is how retail shelf space work for most of the products. Sometimes you are also at the mercy of store manager but for big company items usually that how things are done. Retailers make extra money by selling those endcap and prominent (ie eye level shelf space).

Exactly, prime shelf space is negotiated especially endcaps.

In every store I go to there is 360, Wii, and PS3 in stock, and Wii has never did a price drop, which PS3 HAD DONE

@drkohler

First I would like to thank you for responding to my post. I put a great deal of effort into it, and its nice to see that intelligent discussion can still occur on these forums. Unfortunately I think your confusing the global console race and the domestic console race. This thread was in regards to the North American console market. So I was simply addressing the consoles situation in North America.

Currently the PS3 accounts for 17.5% of the North American market, and as of two weeks ago accounted for 13% of software sales, and with the current margins the PS3 will probably account for less then 15% of the install base, and will probably be closer to 10% in software weekly sales in the new year. That is very dangerous territory. In North America the Gamecube accounted for 16% of the market, and we know how well it was treated by retailers. Now we have Sony with just over half the Gamecubes sales, and trending towards a install base closer to 10%.

Sony is walking a razors edge. A little misfortune, and the console could plummet out of the market. Ideally Sony should price aggressively to avoid going under 15%, but as the rumor states wait till late February or early March. However I would be somewhat shocked if Microsoft and Nintendo did not go after Sony at that critical juncture. Between the two of them all they need is a few major game releases at the exact moment Sony makes its move.

I really think Sony needs to reconsider whether their console can take the pounding this holiday season is apparently bringing. They shouldn't even be letting their consoles come this close in North America. This just seems like suicide to me.
