Forums - Nintendo - So the big wave of new games was a wash... What's going on?

Well you have to understand that the Wii's ungodly success caught everyone but THQ and Ubisoft off guard. Every other third party developer was giving similar support to what they gave gamecube which was close to none. But when the Wii started to fire up devs said oh fuck we're in trouble. That's why we've been seeing a lot of 3rd party games announced for Wii but they are nothing but "makeup" titles. They aren't big titles at all. They are titles that devs are putting out to have their name and games somewhere out there for at least a slight chance of getting something out of Wii's enormous and fast growing base.

So 2007 is goign to be nothing but that for 3rd parties. It's not until 2008 that you are going to see 3rd parties start making these amazing games on Wii. Cuase you can't make an amazing game in half a year. Devs are working on big games for Wii but they won't be releasing til 2008/2009 timeframe. People always say that Wii's biggest year is going to be this year but I beg to differ. I think because 3rd party support is going to be at its maximum next year that's when the Wii will take off not only in enormous sales but in huge 3rd party games that really make the lineup very appealing to all.

But we just have to understand the fact that devs are behind with the Wii and 2007 you aren't going to see too many of them releasing AAA games aside from Ubisoft and THQ in their own rites.

I remember reading postings from people saying that E3 would be the place where the Wii would start to see a huge wave of better games from third parties, better meaning they wouldn't be the same old PS2 ports, minigames, and budget titles that many third parties seem to be dumping on the Wii in order to turn over a quick buck on the system. So what happened?

So far the last few games I've seen announced for the system for 2008 have indeed been the same types of games (a PS2 multi-platform game and a budget title for instance). So why are games like Zack and Wiki and Boogie so few and far between and it seems that many third parties are still putting their top teams on games for the PC/360/PS3? Why are third parties instead putting spinoffs and jnr. titles on the Wii? Will it be another year before that wave finally starts to hit or is this what we can expect for the next few years?

Well anyone who claimed E3 would be when you would see a change was kidding themselves.  Developers anounced a shift in focus less than 2 months before E3, and no one announces new games at E3 without anything to show.  Really, barely anyone announced any new games at E3 at all... which was odd to say the least.

Certainly Wii developer support is slowly raising, but I will repeat what I have said some hundreds of times now "By the end of 2008 the Wii have a noticably dominant share of big new IPs from 3rd party developers."  They will never have the dominant share of old IPs.  However, I also think many of these old IPs are dying this generation.

I think it's asking too much of 3rd parties to expect them to be able to shift focus to a platform they expected to completely bomb within the first year of it's life.  Even Wii games take more than a year to make good.  Meanwhile, I will sit back and watch as generic FPS after generic FPS flops in the over-saturated FPS market (The Darkness).

If you thought The Darkness is generic you've obviously never played it.

Also, I should say I agree with you. There certainly aren't enough big good 3rd party games out there. NiGHTS, No More Heroes, and Zack and Wiki, Final Fantasy CC:CB being the ones that interest me. I do think 4 games is a pretty pathetic 3rd party line up, but I'm pretty confident that this is a temporary situation.

Good point Ckmlb. I don't know anyone who is excited about Boogie.

I like Boogie, but then again I don't have a Wii.

Edit - And i agree with Legend.  The Darkness IS NOT generic.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Yeah, threads like this won't make people point out when Lair and Heavenly Sword flop ...

I have played it.  Following the exact shooter formula with some simple powers added on is not changing the genre.  Now Bioshock, that's changing the genre.

next year will be for sony . mgs4,GT5,GTA4,Killzone 2,... a lot of AAA titles

"Wii are legion, for Wii are many"

Off the top of my head, some 3rd party games coming out this year:
Guitar Hero 3
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Zack and Wiki
Boogie
Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3
NiGHTS
MySims
Medal of Honor: Heroes
Ghost Squad
Rayman: Raving Rabbids 2
Soul Calibur: Legends

What was that you're saying Legend?

I'm actually excited about Boogie too but sadly there just too many other game (360 and Wii) coming out to have that game on my list.  Hopefully the game library at work will have it or at least someone will bring it in so I get a chance to make an ass out of myself in front of everybody.  :-p
