In what appears to be a first, Apple is recommending that Mac users install antivirus software.

But don't read this as an admission that the Mac operating system is suddenly insecure. It's more a recognition that Mac users are vulnerable to Web application exploits, which have replaced operating system vulnerabilities as the bigger threat to computer users.

Apple quietly signaled its shift with an item titled "Mac OS: Antivirus utilities" posted on its Support Web siteNovember 21: "Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult."

The item offers three software suggestions: Intego VirusBarrier X5 and Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 11 for Macintosh, both available from the Apple Online Store, and McAfee VirusScan for Mac.

Brian Krebs, who first reported on the Apple antivirus recommendation Monday in his Security Fix blog at The Washington Post, said an Apple store employee told him he didn't need antivirus software when he purchased a MacBook three months ago.

There goes all the debates that macs dont get viruses

I've met one guy who claimed his Macintosh was invulnerable to viruses.  However, Mac uses Java, therefore it can be infected.

I met alot of people and apple even tells everybody that is going to buy a mac that it doesnt get viruses. When we were looking for a laptop for my brother we went to many stores and all the apple departments(bestbuy) said that they dont get viruses. Also employees at the apple store also say the same thing

In fact, the MACs are the fastest to hack, then Windows Vista, then Windows XP, and Ubuntu was the last man standing... It's not me talking out of my ass, it was tested in a contest...

Of course, MAC OSX having the Unix core is convenient for bug fixes, because there's a whole community who dedicates to that code, the same cannot be said for Windows...

Time will tell if MACs are prepared for the Windows attention or they are better with a "small" but benevolent marketshare...

I thought vista beat xp, but yeah macs were hacked by a network pc ( i think) and the windows was by third party, and linux wasnt even hacked

The benefit of owning a Mac really lies with it's stability. Since MacOS runs on Mac hardware, it is ideal for things such as video and picture editing.

Perhaps Mac is not more secure than Windows. However, if you really wanted security, you should go for Linux. Each OS has it's strenths and weaknesses.

Windows: Wide support base
Mac: Stability
Linux: Security

I prefer using hte Windows enviroment for vido work I am not big on photography so I don't know so much about that. The one thing that Macs have for this type of thing that i can state soundly is that the native color tools are superior in macs. But having used both Macs and PCs on properly built machines I can say that Mac does not have an advantage in stability in fact it does crash more often then the Windows machine......It is just called a kernel panic. Usually the patches fix this but then creates new ones. For me the most frustratng one was having the mac crash over the network when using adobe products(hint it was stable before the update and after the next update).

As of right now Windows has two advantages in this field actually three.

1. More codec support

2. 64 bit photoshop CS4 until Adobe straightens out the Cocoa issue.

3. Faster(Every time I do things on the equivelent specced machines between the two Windows seems to get this stuff down at least 3 minutes faster) I hear Itunes is much faster on a Mac but since I don't use that it doesn't matter to me.

The big Mac advantages are

1. FCP which is becomimng more the industry standard...though Avid is still better IMO and Adobe is catching up.

2. Advanced Color Tools as mentioned earlier this is a biggy and it is easier to calibrate your screen and set diffirent profiles on a Mac.

As for this notice I have been telling people this for the past year since the malicous widgets started popping up and web kit exploits starting to pop in and out with updates.

I dont get why people say this no offense, but you can make a more powerful system with windows and it can do those tasks much faster, also macs do crash a lot. Windows mainly crash because of bad third party software.

from what i can remember apple has always recommended this.... however speaking as an cert. apple tech.... do not use norton it mangles osx.

id argue with all of your points, ive always been able to reneder video faster on macs (especially durring the powerpc era) or have photoshop work better.  from primer to avid its always faster.... and final cut is exclusive, and fun... i find it better then avid, and primer, though with recent changes in primer (well not recent anymore) it has become better

as for constant crashing, sounds like a hard drive problem, normally that or someone mangled the libraries.

as for windows, ture if it wasnt for 3rd parites it wouldnt crash as much, but what good is the OS without them... unless you just want word processing powers.

My old ppc tower can use all 8 avalible gig of ram in photoshop cs 2, but not in 3, or 4 ... so i mainly still use 2 same with illustrator (I ran a test.... one should never have multi gig illustrator files)

`well I'm a graphic & motion designer so I can answer that for you:

2 things: 1. Final Cut Pro isn't available on windows.. & second:

The major printing companies (You know for pressing books, magazines)  are using postscript:

PostScript (PS) is a dynamically typed concatenative programming language created by John Warnock and Charles Geschke in 1982. PostScript is best known for its use as a page description language in the electronic and desktop publishing areas.

And in windows.. the postscript really sucks... most the time with fonts.. it gives to many errors..

So it's not the strenght of the machine but rather the final product what is made on the machine.... We want the best possible end product.. so we use a mac.. it delivers a better end product..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

I do graphic design for a living and i use Windows because it's less of a hassle to work on. I've been working with Macs too (from G3 upwards), and I still prefer Windows machines based on my own configurations.
