Forums - Sony - Ps3: the Dreamcast/Sega Saturn of this Generation?

Well that would explain why Sega are being so sweet to them now.

*points to Valkyria Chronicles and Shenmue 3 - sorry, I mean Yakuza 3*

I think that the Ps3 is an equivilant of the Dreamcast, but at the same time I think it will not share a similar fate, because of three things - 1. The console that is supposedly going to kill it is dying before it finished the job, 2. Multiplatform games are becoming mandatory on all third party releases, with high profile games being the only real exceptions (for more reference, look at Condemned 2, Saints Row 2, Dead Rising 2 and Mass Effect 2 - first two became multiplat, last two have been stated by their respective publishers will be multiplat), and thus studios will be forced to develop for it - hell, even Valve said they'll have to learn the ways of the cell, and 3. Sony are just a bigger market force than Sega. Sega was one studio, Sony Computer Entertainment is made up of 30, most of whom are the definitive studios in their genre.

1. Dead Rising 2 isn't announced, so it's impossible for you to say what platforms it is or isn't on. For all you know it's an N-Gage exclusive.

2. Mass Effect 2 has not been announced for PS3. It's currently announced for 360 and PC only.

3. Sega is not one studio. You obviously know nothing about Sega and haven't played many of their games. Sega has 17 studios. Did you really think one studio was pumping out games every month? Did you really think the same studio that created Virtua Fighter 5 was working on Sonic Unleashed?

Alright, I admit that I was mistaken about Sega, but my point still stands - Sony have a much larger number of studios. The reason they haven't had as many games is said games take longer to make now (hence why they have so many high profile releases in 2009). As for Dead Rising 2 and Mass effect 2, Capcom have said there will be no more third party exclusived from them, and EA are, well, ea, and they're the distributors.

Again, Dead Rising 2 isn't announced. For all we know it may neve be made. Don't feed me the rumor mill either because I don't want to hear it. It could also be a Wii/360 multiplat game, or 360/PC multiplat game, or Wii/PSP multiplat game, or a ton of other configurations that don't involved a PS3. Likely? No. Just don't used an unannounced project with no platform affiliations to prove your point with.

As far as Mass Effect 2, if it's going to be on PS3 then why hasn't EA said so? Here's two seperate incidents where EA(Link 1) and Bioware(Link 2) have specifically mentioned 360 and PC, but no PS3.

Link 1

Link 2

Now the second link may allude to it being on PS3 down the line, or it may mean the PC. The wording is purposely vague. Still, it's not coming to PS3 as of yet, so why use it as an example?

I think the OP is a troll, just going by the title of the topic. It's already obvious at this point that the PS3 will sell more units than either the Xbox or the GameCube from last generation by a very significant margin. All of this Saturn/Dreamcast/Neo Geo talk from people is nothing but trolling.

These pro-x-box guys on this forum prolly work for Microsoft

Saturn/Dreamcast? Not a chance. Sony has a massive array of downloadable games, streaming media, plus lots of top tier games in the pipelines. And Pioneer just rolled out 400GB BluRay discs. Also, the PS3's middleware is, so my spies inform me, much improved. Some developers are just lazy, or choose to focus on one platform or another.

If the PS3 got a price cut to $299/299EUR, it would crush the 360. Why Sony isn't going for the jugular, I don't know. Maybe they're just getting too greedy, or figure (wrongly) that an HD Wii can't hurt them. Maybe the economic crisis has them pinching pennies. Hard to say.

EA doesn't need to announce that its coming on PS3. That doesn't disprove what he has said. And just for the record for people who has no idea nor has studied contracts, guess what happens to contracts when a company is bought out? Do some research coz i cbf answering.

The wording is purposely vague as to keep their options open. That that mean its coming? No, but it doesn't mean its not either. However you've already drawn the conclusion that its definitely not coming.  =\

The lack of knowledge that some people have for one of the greatest developers of all time (Sega) baffles me............. Theres tonnes of Sega game studios that have been making great games for the past 20+ years (Two of the best were sonic team and the MIGHTY AM2)............. Indigo, do you even know Segas origional name? they were called standard games (although most of their games are far from standard) then they were called SErvice GAmes........ and thats how Segas name was born, the 1st two letters from service and the 1st two letters from games.......

Other notable advertising catchphrases were....... to be this good takes AGES..... (ages spelt back to front is Sega)

Lastly Sega have made more games than sony will ever make....... (1st party games i mean, not moneyhatted games like sony are traditionally known for)

Of course EA has to announce Mass Effect 2 is coming to PS3 if it's going to land there. What do you think, one day it'll just show up on the PS3 with no fanfare?

Contracts do not all work the same way. In certain cases, prior agreements still need to be upheld. You, nor I, know of any contract or of any lack of contract Microsoft may have with EA, so no need to speculate.

I came to no conclusions. I merely stated as of now it is publicly known that Mass Effect 2 will show up on 360 first, PC at a later time, and PS3 is up in the air, which means it's a "no" until they say "yes".

no. ps3 in its 2nd year is selling more then 360s 2nd year. a console thats 2x the price of the other is selling quite well.

Sony have 30 development studios? Who are they? And didn't they all merge into one gigantic studio back in 2005? So basically it's one? Hmmm...

Main point- The number of in house development studio's in a company doesn't just determine a consoles success, more importantly it's third party support, something Sony has in spades.
