Momentum was with the PS3 because of a price drop.  Remember, from $500/600 to $400/500.  Thus for a while they had the better value all things considering.  The 360 hadn't had that significant of a drop in it's entire 3 year life span and was overdue.  PS3 sales are not good, all things considering.  And it is not early days anymore.  The Wii is 2 years old as well, look what it's done starting with the lowest price and the casual market.

Because the loss of revenue due to exchange rates (around 15-20%) is much larger than their profit margins. I'd be surprised if Sony's losses were less than $1.5 billion in this quarter, and I'd say "wow" if they manage to lose less than a billion. Only some massive hedging could do that, and nothing I've seen points in that direction.

I have posted the calculations elsewhere but it's getting tiring so I won't do it again. Just wait two months for the financial report.

It will dramatically change their console R&D philosophy.

No more "revolutionary chip design", or billions to invent a new storage format.  Just a slightly modified faster Cell with Blu-Ray, faster graphics and more memory.  Heck, just dump the cell and have IBM/Intel design a processor for you.

 

I hope all these people going on about a price drop realize if the 360 get's enough momentum the price drop won't do much. It could be too little too late like the first 360 price drop in Others. What happens if the PS3 only get's cloes to 360 numbers with a price drop? What then?

The Cell is made by IBM.

Oh, and the Cell really isn't all that powerful.  It is good for doing calculations, physics and calculus stuff, but compared to a PC processor in terms of power it is a wimp.  You could buy one of Nvidia's video cards with CUDA processing and it would destroy the Cell.

 

I can't wait for the November and December npds .It's going to be a slaughter . As for next year say helllo to a 149$ arcade xbox360 !!

Looking at the charts, this week (so far) pretty much cancels out the MGS4 spike...that's gotta hurt seeing as though this is just a run of the mill week leading up to the holidays - price cut was 2 months ago...gears 2 release was 3 weeks ago.

That is the other half of their problems. Retail sales are said to be down around 1% in several countries... Now take that 1% as an average among all products and ask yourself if Sony's sales drop is above or below that.
