I can imagine it. A Zelda game in a Sci-Fi setting and a deeper and richer story than previous games in the series.

That would piss so many fans off, even if it sold millions.
But Miyamoto did suggest a Terminator-like story to justify using Zelda with the zapper. He got voted down by the development team.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Fans always say they want something different from the norm yet when they get it, they complain like children

Don't rehash Zelda!
Why did you change the artwork! We want the old style!
Why the old style? The new artwork was great!

1. That was only the first part, and in LttP, that was with Aganim, which was really Ganon, but not the final battle. 2. That was the Dodongo Cave, and that was from the first game, so that's a series staple. 3. Wrong. It was collecting three things before the next act of the game. Simply collecting things is aother series staple. 4. Not really. There was no Lon-Lon Ranch. Hyrule Castle was in the center, not the top. The desert was southwest, not west. Lake Hylia was southeast, not south. Kokariko village was west, not northeast. And as for other locations, they were from the first two game. |
You realize my post was about how OoT did not reformulate Zelda like LttP did right? I mean come on dude...
I know it wasn't the final battle with Ganon but it was the same battle you had twice in LttP... and ended up being in the final battle of OoT.
I know it's from the first game it's just a point.
Uhm you did play LttP right? I mean the crystals that were protected by the maidens that were raplaced by the sages. And yes collecting those medalions which were lifting from LttP into OoT as well.
And I mean layout as in general... not literal, there is a Kokariko villiage, there is a Hyrule Castle, there is a desert, there is a Lake Hylia... and it repeats many many times...

But Link to the Past didn't reformulate Zelda! And if it did, Ocarina of Time did so in much more meaningful ways.
That's foolish. The Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass both have already surpassed OoT, silly director.
while i agree lttp perfected 2D zelda, with an epic adventure series like zelda 3 dimensions is where the series truly belongs. about a year ago i went back to play lttp and it was very plain how much OoT advanced the series. no denying lttp is as good as it gets for an adventure game in 2D. but the transition to 3D with OoT was incredible (just like with mario 64). and while ocarina of time didn't do 3D perfect it did the transition incredibly well and advanced the series greatly and it is definitely the best.
but a new best zelda is definitely possible with a fresh new feeling to the controls and an advanced story line, larger scope, and greater difficulty.

Yes it did. LttP started the Three Dungeons -> Master Sword -> Dual World -> Advanced Dungeons formula.
Wind Waker and Twilight Princess played around with this formula but OoT lifted it right out of LttP and didn't change a thing.

But... but that isn't even a significant formula! It's a theme. A formula would be "descend into the dungeon and acquire an item which allows you to complete puzzles in that dungeon".
LoZ established the series formulae. What LttP did was establish several tropes used in other games.
