Forums - Sony - Square Enix really stabbed Sony in the back

SE is not Sony's friends. Businesses in general are not freinds. They are businesses.

For years SE and Sony had a mutually beneficial relationship. Sony provided a dominant platform and SE was free to focus the development on that platform and save significant costs without losing much sales.

Sony, by its own missteps, lost the dominant position of yesteryears and with that its interests were not aligned anymore with SE's.

SE did what every business is required by law - act for the benefit of its shareholders. In this case - it correctly recognized that its shareholder value will be much higher if it will release its games to the more prevelant gaming platforms of this generation. And it did what it had to do.

Had SE put Sony's interests ahead of its shareholders, it's board and management would have failed their bona fide duties and would likely be ousted by its share holders.

This is business. Not social.

You people should be lucky that S-E even care about the PS3 at all.  S-E didn't do anything wrong.  Sony did.  S-E are just trying to make money and they have to look at new opportunities.  Last generation, developers could develop just for the PS2 and still make a huge amount of profit.  However, development costs went up this gen to a point where making exclusives is incredibly risky now.  Game development is a business first and a love labour second.  Sony made several bad descisions related to the PS3 and as a result lost significant market share.  If game developers want to make serious profit now, multiplatform development is the way to go and S-E have recognized this.

@Riachu, yeah but being a 360 exclusive (for now anyway :P), has a bad omen written all over it ;/

I think if SE want's to be multi-plat, they need to stop with all this exclusive crap xD

IU is exclusive because Microsoft own the IP.  TLR was paid for by Microsoft to be released first on their system.  Star Ocean 4 started development when the PS3 dev kit wasn't ready yet and the 360 dev kit was.  I am sure that S-E will consider porting the game to the PS3 sooner ot later.

I think the reason y some ppl are taking this as back stabbing is because Sony kept Square alive after that horrendous Spirits Within movie, and now they have published two exclusive games for the 360, gave timed exclusivity for last remnant, and one of Sony's previously biggest exclusive, their ace in the hole, is multiplatform. All I'm saying is that if a good friend of mine that I've worked and known for a long time, helped me keep a roof over my head, I wouldn't turn them down when they are in need of help.

@Riachu, oh I'm sure they will to :P But it's like, I understand the multi-plat release of FFXIII, it sucks sure, but I get it. But they're not even making an effort to get SO out at the same time, and they haven't even mentioned if they would or not :P I have a feeling they will, because the 360 just doesn't seem like it will move JRPG's in Japan... Or anywhere :x At least it certainly doesn't feel that way.

I dunno, it just doesn't seem like they're very focused, it seems like they're bouncing all over the place :x

From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.

At least Sony owners still get FFXIII. When Square went from Nintendo to Sony, all Nintendo fans got was Sony's ass to kiss. I kissed it. It tasted like lemon drops.

the way i see it is that SE is just trying to make more money off their games. Either from MS bribes like a lot of people think, or just by selling as many copies of their games as possible. From a business perspective, selling their games on both the 360 and ps3 is a good strategy since they can make so much more money off of games that are getting expensive to make.

Where is that Picard face palm picture when I need it. Oh yeah, here it is.

Businesses are not friends. You do realize that if Nintendo didn't publish the original Final Fantasy, Square would have went of business right. Does that mean, they have to be beholden to Nintendo? Nope. Same holds true for the situation with Sony. Not only that. Square Enix is business. They need to make money. If the PS3 were as dominant as the PS2 and PS1, Sony would be seeing the same level of support from SE as in the past. That however is not the case.

Then I guess by your logic SE should never have had anything to do with Sony in the first place to have them betrayed. Shoulda been just Nintendo.

i hear a lot of people saying business this, business that,,, lets recap a little:
SE said that FXIII is going to 360 due new multiplatform strategy and high cost of HD superproductions, good for them, but at the same time SO4 remains exlusive to 360 ? WTF?
moreover, Last remnant (which i dont care for anymore) launches exclusively on 360 with no date for the PS3 version! WTF ENCORE :)

SE at least show some respect for your once beloved partner, its fine to port your game to other consoles, but at least port back!

At one time in this gaming industry Square Enix were on good terms with Sony. However, on one horrible day at E3 2008, they announced that one of playstation best exclusive series was going on the 360. The 360, who happens to be the Ps3's #1 rivals. It was like a shot heard around the world to Sony. Now I am hearing Square-Enix is pushing 360 to sell more than the ps3 in japan. Japan! which happens to be the place where they are keeping Final Fantasy XIII exclusive. What the hell is going on? I mean I might be overreacting, but Final Fantasy series is probably the best RPG exclusives Sony has to offer. I don't know but after hearing Square Enix talk about pushing 360 in japan, I have lost a lot of respect for Japan.

There a business and they want your money,360 sells more games than PS3,so why not have double the revenue, and who cares if a game went multiplat.
