Forums - Sony - PS3 outsells the Saturn

Wikipedia article is wrong, Saturn didn't even ship 10m. Master System was second best selling Sega console with 13m.

Problem with the Wikipedia entry is that the footnote for the 17m sold, if you actually follow that link, is a redirect to GamePro, where it is noted in the source article that the Saturn only sold 9.5m.

http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/111822/the-10-worst-selling-consoles-of-all-time/

Re-reading Wikipedia's console entries for fifth gen ... there are A LOT of things wrong with it. But the Saturn sales are the most glaring. Saturn didn't sell 17m -- not even close!

Then I guess with those numbers, this achievement for the PS3 has been celebrated almost a year late.

I think the PS3 will outsell every console aside from the PS2 and Wii when it's shelf life has finished. But that's a looooong way in the future.

Do you realize the PS1 has sold 103 million units? For the PS3 to outsell it is impossible. I don't mean unlikely, I mean impossible.

But hasn't the PS3 sold more in it's first 2 years than the PS1 did? That's what I've heard anyway.

The Playstation started out incredibly slow, but quickly picked up with the releases of games such as Tekken 2 and Final Fantasy VII. The Playstation 3 won't have that same benefit. Anywho, the article is completely inaccurate, and the PS3 passed the Saturn some time in early 2008.

Worldwide, the PS3 has passed the Saturn maybe long ago. But then again the Saturn never had any success outside Japan.

It will take some more time for the PS3 to outsell the Saturn in Japan, where it had modest success.

Looks like the footnotes from that page lead to the book "Invisible Engines: How Software Platforms Drive Innovation and Transform Industries" for the 17m figure.

http://www.26econ.com/pdf/InvisibleEngines.pdf

So I downloaded the book from MIT press, and then find that the book got its 17m figure from a Dec 2000 Cahners In-Stat report at the time of the original X-Box's debut. A copy of the Cahners In-Stat report in .pdf form costs $2,495.

Screw that! GamePro says the Saturn sold 9.5M, I'll trust GamePro! :p

FWIW, the Invisible Engines book also notes the original PS sold nearly 10m in the first two years, but then exploded to hit 26m total in year three. It achieved 81m after year six, for those wondering about original PS figures.

PS3 will never pass the Saturn where it matters...in my heart! :)

That's not true. If you follow the link you do not get redirected to GamePro, but to this PDF article:
http://www.26econ.com/pdf/InvisibleEngines.pdf

In it, you'll find the following quote: "Sega’s Saturn fared very poorly, with only 17 million units sold by 1998, when it was discontinued."

Now, it doesn't give sources for that quote, so I cannot say how true it is. But at least get your facts straight.

This is invisible text!

See my last post above, just noticed that. Depending on which Wikipedia page you view, you'll find different sales figures for the Saturn with different sources.
