Forums - Sony - I'm amazed by GT5P sales.

I love it, a thread about a games success turns into a pissing match from the other consoles fanboys about bundles and cheap prices and all this other bullshit. Who cares, be happy the game did well and move on.

As in go buy us some coffee.

hype and word of mouth = help sells games ?? LOL really ? i thought it was reviews(although enter the matrix sold great with kind of bad reviews)

btw..the underlined portion is what you believe...clearly an opinion...saw tons of youtube videos where ppl stated the game was not the full game and it has more cars than grid...every one was well aware that gt5p was not GT5

highlighted portion is just laughable...pure fail right there

Alright, here are a few of your assertions that I consider ignorant:

You believe:

1. Reviews determine sales, not hype.

Not true. Look at LBP, BG&E, and Okami. Great reviews, mediocre sales. There are tons more titles to include here. Hype, marketing, word of mouth. Those things are far more responsible for sales of any given game.

2. You say that some youtube video's state that the game isn't a complete stand-alone game.

My assertion was that the game was hyped by PS3 fans, and that Sony itself never called the game a demo, but instead a full-game. A demo for GT5P was actually released in Japan. Was that a demo of a demo? Sony certainly never calls the game a demo. It calls it a "game." Some PS3 fans reject calling the game a demo, as I've quoted, and ALL PS3 fans hyped the game. Again, you are focusing on one aspect of my overall argument because you think you can formulate a point against it. There is a whole entire list of points you have yet to address.

3. You can use childish internet expressions like "fail" to seriously debate someone.

Sir, what you are doing is trolling. You can't tell someone that they "fail" without backing it up in some way. Not everyone agrees with what you think is so obvious. You are dangeriously close to catching a ban, I'd bet.

You can troll through life without ever putting any effort into anything, but sir, if you plan on addressing me, I would appreciate some effort.

1: lbp did bad in terms of sales ???...well too human and haze didnt sell well and both was extremely hyped

2: well ok...i was wondering why would ppl buy GT5p if they think it is the full game...i mean GT4 had over 550 cars, GT3 had well over 250 cars...GT5P only got 60 cars...guess you can help me understand...

Compare it's features to that of full racing games.  Then think of all the content the full GT5 will come with. :O

I can't stand racing sims, and even I'm impressed, lol.

GT is by far Sony's most profitable franchise. The retail sales of GT5P have probably already paid off all of GT5's development expenses thus far and then some.  Who knows how many copies they've sold via the PSN.

Could not disagree more.

They say each car takes about 6 months to make.

So your paying each graphic designer for basically 2 cars... for a full years work.

Lets say 700 cars.

That's 350 graphic designers.

Say you pay them an insulting 20,000 a year.

That's already 7 million dollars for just the car graphic designers.

Throw in damage modeling, tracks, the game engine (which has to be percise.)...

They'll need to crack the old GT numbers to make a profit on this one.

40 out of 60 seems generous considering all the other costs assosiated with making the game as well.  (Discs/instruction printing/shipping) etc.

They could always outsource the production to many 3rd party or other internal devs (like many other Sony games). Also, I doubt they literally meant that each car takes 6 months to create (maybe for one person), it's also possible that development has been much more efficient since that interview. The way I saw it (based on GTTV) was that Polyphony splits up all their work sorta like an assembly line (like most devs), the "graphics" department (which may have about 35-50 fulltime employees) has a bunch of braches that work together to complete the process.

I'm not saying GT5 doesn't take ALOT of money to develop, but I don't think your example is entirely true. The official website also states that Polyphony Digital consist of about 110 employees.

I guess I should've worded that better.  You're not the first person to misread my statement.  I better exlapin what I meant in the following post, as well as analyze the expenses of the game:

http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/post.php?id=1476157

And you say 40 out of $60 seems generous.  Let's say they only make $30 per copy sold.  They'd still only have to sell 5 million copies of the game to make back $150 million (assuming the game costs such an insane amount to develop, far more than either GTAIV or FFXIII, as far as I know).

And that's not including the sales of Prologue.  I highly doubt they'd need to sell anywhere close to 10 million, thus "cracking the old GT numbers", to make a profit on this one

Keep in mind that his exampled proposed that they'd be making the game in a year, to make the calculations easier.

Assuming a ~4 year development time, they'd only need 1/4th the number of coders (~86) to do that same amount of work, but the $7 million figure would remain the same.

Though 4 years is probably a bit long, seing as they were workign on Tourist Trophy until the end of 2006.  And I'm sure they were (kinda) working on GT4 Mobile sometime around then as well. :P
