Forums - Gaming - Multi-Disc Final Fantasy XIII On 360 Looking Likely

Final Fantasy VII was three discs, Final Fantasy VIII was four discs, Final Fantasy IX was four, and on the 360, Lost Odyssey has already been four discs. Which begs the question...

So what?

the so what is just the fact its way better on one disk then multiple disks so you don't have to switch it over.

example on 360 - Level 5 completed...(please insert disk 2)

on PS3 - Level 5 completed...Level 6

I think you're using the term "way better" far too loosely. I believe you mean "practically the same". I refuse to believe that anyone could truly have a problem with multiple discs given that they will likely turn on and turn off the game on their console a couple of dozen times whilst playing. Nobody, and I repeat nobody, is that silly - despite what they might say on a message board.

3 discs? Try 7 or 8. MGS4 used 50GB, and 75GB to 100GB discs are just around the corner. Eventually, BluRay disks will reach 150Gb to 200GB.

For other genres, especially shooters, which are linear experiences featuring the same dusky, dreary slab of battlefield red-brown-greys, the extra space doesn't matter. But for RPGs, which require huge, immersive and expansive game-worlds which the player has the freedom to explore as they wish, the lack of storage is a deal-killer. Reason: every new location requires you to backtrack to a particular disc. Instead of changing the disc every ten hours, it will be more like every ten minutes, especially later in the game.

have you played ff7 or lost oddysey, i dont remember a time when i had to back track to disc 2 or disc 3 when i was on disc 4 LOLs, usually you just keep playing foward and theres really no use in going back to disc 1 or disc 2 when on disc 4, when a story starts out, all the missions and storyline will happen in disc 1, what ever you need to collect will be on that disc, items and other stuff will be passed to disc two, you will have same enviroments same places to explore but new storyline and objective will on disc 2.

I don't care how many discs the Xbox version gets while the PS3 version is complete, and not cut down to make it equal to the xbox one, but I must say something about your argument.

You said if he ever played FF7... well... did you ever play FF8 or FF9?

There are areas you can't access once you are on a different disc. True, you do not backtrack changing a disc like the one you quoted said, but there are unaccessible areas depending on the disc on this two sequels.

The "FFVII 3 disc" justification is invalid while the "load time vs. game install" is also invalid. The bigger picture here is that developers had no other choices but CD's and cartridges during the 32/64 bit days where CD's proved to be more advantageous. Choices now are Blu-ray and DVD's where as the console industry progresses, Blu-ray has proven more advantageous. It's not as much a CD's and cartridges, but still advantages. And with the NXE, is seems that hard drive installs will be the preference at this rate on the 360 when given the oppotunity even though it's not required. So now both the 360 and PS3 has the common advantage of hard drive installation.

Correct, but furthermore has the 360 the advantage of futur online distribution via XBL. So that disc issue is irrelevant.

I don't see Sony killing the BR for online distribution...

But I won't write anything else and let the Fanboys posting glorified BS...

"Ahahaha imagine the 360 retared getting their 25 discs game ... hhihihih ... ohohoh .... BR rulez... viva Sony..."

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

Well that tends to be the response when people try to make an issue out of a non-issue.

Yeah precisely with these style of RPG games it's not really an issue, unless there's an abnormally high level of quests involving returning the golden amulet found from killing the giant rat in Act 3 to the shopkeeper in Act 1...

If it were GTA 5 where you're constantly going to all areas of the map for joyrides then it's an issue.

Anyone who bought The Last Remnant on Thursday will have noticed one blatantly obvious thing, it comes on two discs. Now, this might not be that concerning to too many people, but it could hint that this could be the way things will be done in the future.

As everyone is now aware, Final Fantasy XIII is being released on the Xbox 360, as part of Square Enix's new "let's make money" strategy. It's more than likely that Final Fantasy XIII will dwarf The Last Remnant in size, and if they couldn't compress that game down, it is likely that they will struggle for Final Fantasy XIII as well. The only thing that might discount this, is that The Last Remnant was developed using an external engine (Unreal 3), whereas Final Fantasy XIII is being developed using Square Enix's own Crystal Tools.

People joked a lot about the amount of discs Metal Gear Solid would need if it were ever released on the 360, and this might start up all over again now that people have seen The Last Remnant.

Concerning the Playstation 3, well The Last Remnant is said to be coming on one disc, and there is even talk of the Japanese voice work being included too; so it doesn't look like there are any storage issues there. This will probably hold true for Final Fantasy XIII, but the question is; how many discs will Final Fantasy XIII actually need on the 360? Your guess is as good as mine, but if they use similar compression on Final Fantasy XIII as they did on The Last Remnant, you're probably looking at 3-4.

Nobody cares because switching a disc is not a big deal.

Baldurs gate came on 6 discs (including the expansion), but because the developers weren't total clods it wasn't an issue

Also, the guys over at SE are not clods either, so it wont be an issue

Moving along!!

Well it is uo to you if u prefer installation for 20 minutes and the lost of 5GB HDD-space or switching discs 3 times for 45seconds, without losing space on the HDD.

That is odd, BluRay offers so much space, but developers are just not able to use this as advantage. So the PS3 won't have an advantage due to BluRay. Like in every other multi-plat game before. Blue Dragon comes on 6discs i guess, Infinite Undiscovery on two, Lost Odyssey on four.

the greatest game ever, shenmue I/II, came on 7 discs and it did not affect gameplay in any way.

Dude, where can I buy your time machine?

Who knows if the PS3 version even requires an install besides you?

As posted earlier by leo-j many games for the PS3 don't need installs, such as those listed and my current game-of-the-day Dead Space.

Of course, these games are not in the same Genre (as said by KylieDog) as FFXIII so comparrison will be difficult if not impossible. At this stage we will only know for sure it needs an install if we can have access to your time machine. so how about it? fancy letting us take it for a spin?

anyway, back on topic I kind of like the nostalgic effect of multiple FF disks, makes me feel all warm inside.

I know, but jeez theres no need to over-do it...

To the topic again who cares (Lol see what i did there?) most likely this game is gonna flop anyways be it on PS3 and 360 since there slowly but surely losing there Final Fantasy Fanbase after X...

Versus XIII on the other hand is a whole other story.
