Super Mario Galaxy was disqualified from that list because it wasn't in playable form (...)

What do you mean? Demos don't count?

(Crysis was playable, I watched a 2 or 3 minute video of someone from the media playing it at E3)

From the website:

"In order to compete, a game be shown in hands-on playable format. For the 2007 awards season, playable format is defined as the ability for the judge to manipulate a game in real-time while running on its native platform (i.e. "hands on" gameplay). Games that are only demonstrated on videotape or through screenshots, concept art, rendered movies, pre-scripted (i.e. non-interactive) gameplay sequences, or developer-controlled theater demos are automatically disqualified from consideration in the major award categories. Non-playable games are still eligible for Special Commendations in Graphics and Sound Design."

Everyone played the Galaxy demo man. You have any idea how many gameplay videos are all over the web? Maybe it wasn't on the floor, I dunno. But it was definitely playable.

I think Super Mario Galaxy had an on stage demonstration, not one that could be played by the judges.

4 Xbox 360 exclusives (including 360/PC games), 2 PS3 exclusives, 0 Wii exclusives.

1 DS game and 0 PSP games.

Rock Band got 3 awards, Mass Effect got 2. The only games with multiple awards.

Killzone Killzowned the graphics department next to games like Crysis and COD 4 wich says something...

I wonder if the MGS 4 game demo was at E3 instead of a week after in Japan, if it would have won something. Still it wouldn't have been playable by critics so probably not.

hum I'm not sure you read correctly... it's special award commendation..... it wasn't competing with COD4 and Crysis at any moment as it was impossible for it to be in the competion.... it was easy to win that award for KZ as clearly WII games are not fit for that one in the first place and MS totaly avoided to show any games for next year except a thin minority..... I think MGS4 would have wone that award if they had the game demo at E3.....

Your saying mgs4 looks better than killzone2 in the graphics department? And when are the sales numbers coming?!?!?!

of what i understood they are comming tonight for everything except japan tomorrow....

well it's not that I think MGS 4 is better it is that I think that KZ is not that great with what they showed (CAUTION, i'm not saying it won't) replay the E3 trailer a couple time and in slow mo and you should see what i'm talking about... don't get me wrong I really apreciated it during sony press conference.... and i really liked the MGS trailer... even if I'm not interested in the game (I don't like stealth game in general)... and I don't really care about cut scene trailers... but it was highly entertaining for gamers... I agree also with KZ 2007 award... I'm just saying the competion for that one wasn't really high....

I could be wrong but I got the feeling that the new format for E3 insulated the elitest hard-core gamer critics in a little bubble ...

Typcially Nintendo gets nominated and wins E3 awards based on 'grass-roots' popularity among the peons that aren't allowed into E3 anymore. Historically speaking, as E3 opens there are people who sprint to Nintendo's booth for an opportunity to play Nintendo's games before release; it wasn't uncommon to have the shortest line at Nintendo's booth being longer than any line at any other booth in spite of Nintendo having far more kiosks available for people to play.

If E3 was in its usual format I expect that these critics would be forced to bump certain games off of their list because they couldn't ignore the 3 hour long line-up for people to try Wii Fit, the 8 Super Smash Bros. Brawl Kiosks that constantly have 4 player games going on, or the constant crowd around the Metroid Prime 3 and Mario Galaxy kiosks to simply get a glimpse of these games.

yeah I think you are right... all the videos I've seen was always a demonstration from some presentator....

I dunno about the judges but Frank Cannon from Arstecnhica played it:
"The level I played involved the traversing of a platform-laden maze with the goal of collecting a variety of gray stars scattered about the field."
http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2007/07/13/ars-at-e3-hands-on-with-super-mario-galaxy

Jeff Gerstmann from Gamespot played it too:
"While it wasn't shown in detail at Nintendo's press conference, there is a pretty cool playable demo of the tentatively titled Super Mario Galaxy here at the Electronic Entertainment Expo."
http://e3.gamespot.com/story.html?sid=6150125&pid=915692

And so did the guys from IGN:
"In today's demo we had a chance to take a look at four different stages, each set within a different 'Galaxy.'" (and take look at the first 3 pages of videos)
http://wii.ign.com/articles/803/803958p1.html

More from Kotaku about co-op gameplay:
"Crecente and I got hands on with Super Mario Galaxy's two player co-op play."

Or Aussie IGN:
"We played on the 'Star Dust Galaxy' trail in the E3 demo - exploring this very early portion of the game thoroughly."

It didn't win, but it was definitely playable, at least 4 levels, it seems.

They did play it I saw it at e3 live, they had a demo of the bumble bee level. And how mario scratched her back in order to stop the trouble.

I would of understood a marginal Wii/DS showing but this is just insulting to Nintendo in general. These guys have their collective heads up their collective asses. Intellectually honest critical review does not differ this much from sales growth. I think this list shows how out of touch these guys are with the market when their list disagrees so strikingly with sales numbers.

And just to silence some of the fanboys in advance, I am by no means saying anything bad about the games that made the list. All I am saying is I think a lot of good Nintendo games were ruled out for superficial reasons and probably not given a fair chance.

With that said this is not a big deal ultimately and I doubt it will really effect very many people's opinions.

If it doesn't matter much why are you freaking out? What Wii game other than Mario Galaxy should have appeared on this list?

Critical and popular success don't always come together, the best rated movies don't always sell the most. Same with everything in life.

Agreed. Not only that, this isn't the critics "best games of the year" award, it's the critics "best of show" award. Games with better graphpics tend to... show better (tend, mind you). There's nothing conspiratorial here, Sqrl.
