Lots of people have been saying the biggest feature of the PS3 is having a cheaper blu-ray. Well thats about to change because Sony announced a blu-ray price drop of $1,000 to $600. Since Sony is planning a Blu-ray price drop could they also be planning a PS3 price drop to keep people buying there console since the Blu-ray could be the same price. If they dont they could be in for a rough ride.

It's unlikely that the player price drop would effect the PS3's price, as the PS3 is already loosing hundreds with each unit out the door. They're probably quite right when they say we won't see a price cut until 2009. As for the cheaper player having an effect on PS3 sales. I have a feeling they'll hoping it will be the other way around. If this cheaper player helps them win the format war over HD-DVD, PS3 sales should pick up considerably.

not really. it just gives you the choice between a BD player for 600, or a BD player/gaming system/web browser/media manager for psp for 600. i don't think the ps3 looses this battle more than 1 time out of 10. i like having more. NOW, if the BD player they were coming out with were only a mere 400...yeah then there would be some issues.

This is still ridiculously expensive in my books. I have never actually PAID for a DVD player (first was my PS2, then got one for free) except for one I just bought in Singapore - $150 AU (and the reason I bought it, was that it plays Xvid, Divx, from USB drives, progressive scan/HDMI, etc - and it even CAME with a HDMI cable...). $600US = $800AU = shitload of money. I'll rather add an extra 50-60 DVD's to my collection... ... This is a reactive move by Sony because: - lots of people are not buying PS3's - HD-DVD players are much cheaper Sony can't afford to lose BOTH the console war and next-gen DVD war - this gives them some more hope in the DVD war in case they lose the PS3 war.

Something I saw talked about quite a bit several months ago was that neither HD-DVD nor Blu-Ray were meeting the (sales) expectations of the movie studios ... it is possible that (even with the sales increase caused by the PS3) sales are still not meeting expectations Regardless of whether their expectations were rational or not movie studios are probably putting pressure on both the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray camps to increase sales. Now, the general (HDTV owning) public's main reason not to adopt a HD format is the players are too expensive and the content is not there yet; Sony is (probably) trying to reduce the cost of entry of their stand alone Blu-Ray players in order to spur sales and reduce the flak they have been getting from the movie studios.

To be honest I alway heard the blu-ray disc added 150 to 200 bucks to the PS3's cost. But Sony does need to drop the price of the PS3 by about 200 bucks for it to make a comeback.

I just want to say they WERE makeing the PS3 for ~800$. That is saying the BluRay drive cost 200$. And includeing the Emotion chip. 75$. Their already working on dropping the chip die sizes. which should drop the cost of each chip by about 25-40%. That would drop the cost of the PS3 for sony by the end of 2007 to near 500$. If sony does not do a price drop in 2007. They wont be losing much in Q4 2007 on each unit sold. However they will probabilistically drop the price.
