^I agree, but the amount of investment that Sony and Microsoft are putting in this generation's consoles make it seem like they're in it for the long haul. The Wii seems like it's going to get a revamp much sooner than the rest, with Shigeru already talking about Wii HD (hinting about it).

So basically, yea you're right. the winner does go on to fight with the next generation, but in this case it's different. The Wii is a totally different kind of console from the others, and it's not exactly future proof. I think that the PS3/360 have the potential to actually stay in the market longer than the Wii.

Agreed if Wii has taught us anything it's that this generation of consoles is different from those past.

I honestly want to ask these two posters, seriously, no sarcasm or joking here.

What makes you think two systems that are selling much less than the Wii, not making any profit at all will give them a longer lifetime than the Wii?  Thats right, the products that are selling LESS will have a longer life on the market.

Because it sure doesn't make any sense.

First of all don't read too much into statements that hint at a WiiHD; you can find statements that hint at the original Wii that pre-date the GC.

Second, with regards to future proofing, the people who feel that wii's specs won't be any good in the future by and large don't think they are any good right now. Nintendo clearly does not care to appeal to that group (perhaps because during the gens that Nintendo's specs rocked that group still didn't buy Nintendo products).

Third Nintendo has a long history of being the last to launch. If Nintendo was willing to cling to gen 6 where they were in third place, why wouldn't they cling to gen 7 where they are first.

Fourth if you what to see want Nintendo does when a dated technology vaults it into first place, just look at the NES or Gameboy.

The PS3/360 want to extend this generation a little longer than usual to make their money back.

But also, Nintendo wants to extend this generation because they're making 10 billion dollars a second.

When the time comes to jumpstart the 8th generation, I guarantee it won't be Nintendo.  Why would they want to dethrone themselves and start over?  Nintendo will not be the first to have a new console.  When the losers try to up the ante with new consoles that actually compete with the Wii (more than their current HD offerings), that is when Nintendo's next system will strike.

Some of those numbers are wrong...

Atari had a few rivals that topped 10m (Intellivision I'd wager).

PC Engine was pretty successful in Japan and did ok elsewhere.

Genesis is complicated because I'm pretty sure you can still buy it in portions of South America where they still make it. So the officially tally is 30m...but...I'd wager the company that sells in South America isn't included in the total. Still, South America isn't a big market. But Genesis could easily be in the low 30ms if you include that.

PS2, if you check out our stickied "official big three quarterly results" thread has shipped about 133m "to date" (which is through Sept 2008). Sony did at one point claim it had shipped 140m, but BKK2 and I came to the conclusion it was a typo or a spoken mistake, based on shipments of about 120m through December 2006 in many other sources, ~10m through December 2007 according to a press conference Sony held, and then about 4m through September 2008.

PS2 will certaintly reach 140m shipped, but it isn't quite there yet guys.

Competition is good, but it doesn't exist when you're Nintendo.

The 7th gen is certainly an entertaining one no doubt. Not the best (Go 5th gen!)

 ^Bolded because it's a great line.

More competition the better.

4 ≈ One

This gen had the most balanced competition, since Nintendo still hasn't got a sick majority of the market, like Sony did with the PS and PS2.

This quick reversal of roles is very hilarious though!

I hate this generation because i have to buy PS3 (mgs4,Gow3,FFXVIII,WKC) and Xbox360 (TOV,IU,TLR,LO) to enjoy all types of games. Last gen i only own PS2.
