Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie: Third parties don't "get" the Wii, more

I think your estimations for high budget wii game are a bit low. At least red steel and smg cost more to develop than 10 million. I think that those two aren't the only games which cost more than 10m on wii.

First off, a couple of games that surpass an estimate do not (necessarily) make it meaningless ... Just because Konami took (more than) 3 years with  (more than) 200 developers to produce Metal Gear Solid 4 doesn't mean that an estimate of $50,000,000 for a big budget PS3 game is too low.

Secondly, I haven't heard any numbers for Super Mario Galaxy being that Nintendo is one of the quietest companies in the industry when it comes to how they develop games. I do know that Ubisoft claimed $12 Million for Red Steel and we don't know to what extent they included other costs (like Marketing) in their budget.

So maybe you should use something else than "sky is the limit" estimate for a high budget hd-game. After all, it is just couple of games.

Red Steel cost over 10 million to make?!?!?! In my mind, there's no way it even passed 3 million... Do you have a Link, Esa-Petteri?

That is amazing, especially considering how crappy the game was in almost all aspects.

Was there any specific reason for that high cost, or is that normal? I find it hard to believe that it had the same budget as games like TP, SMG, and MP3.

And that's still twice as much as Super Mario Galaxy, so you are failing to prove Wii games cost as much as equivalent HD games.

SMG is not equilevant to GTA IV. You are failing to provide anything meaningful on this discussion.

Excuse me, I meant in terms of being a huge, epic, AAA game for that developer. But regardless, you still have no proof Wii games cost as much as HD games to make, aside from insisting a trio of games flopped, when the very developers said otherwise.

Except, I wouldn't consider Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 4, Final Fantasy XIII, and Grand Theft Auto 4 to be "Just a couple of games" ... Every one of the Massive HD games are being developed by over 100 developers for over 3 years, and it is difficult to come up with an upper limit on what big budget HD console games can cost.

I'm willing to accept that a big-budget Wii game can cost up to $20 Million, are you willing to accept that even the biggest budget Wii games are still on the lower side of "Average" for a HD console game?

I don't think that you will find answer for that from these forums. :) I'm just saying that wii games aren't automatically ~5x cheaper to develop than hd-games, like some people seem to think around here.

Red Steel was the perfect  example of quantity over quality ... Red Steel had a much longer single player campaign than most good HD FPS, and had more multiplayer modes with more maps than most HD FPS, the problem was that most of the content was pretty unimpressive.

Could you please point me where I have ever said that wii games cost as much as hd games to make and oh, please tell me what "trio of games" have flopped according to me?

Give me a minute. I might have confused someone else's comment for yours. Let me make sure.

I am willing to accept that a hd AAA-title costs more to develop than a AAA-title for wii and that average quality game costs less for wii than for Ps3/360.
