Sony is a stronger brand WW there's no denying that.
But MS was smart to launch first and get ahead in sales/software library and price cutting. Sony further shot themselves in the foot by launching at $600
All other things being equal I think PS3 would eventually overtake the 360 but MS has no interest in making things equal. If MS is determined to stay in 2nd there's nothing Sony can do to stop it from happening, unless they are willing to bathe in red ink which I think they've had quite enough of.
MS will buy whatever exclusives, cut the price to whatever is necessary and promote like crazy to keep 2nd place.
| RolStoppable said: The PS3 probably won't ever pass the 360 in lifetime sales. The battle takes place in the Western markets, Japan will be nearly a non issue even though the PS3 will win this region obviously. But since Japanese support for both consoles will most likely dry up due to the Wii's success, hardware sales for the 360 and PS3 in Nippon will drop to insignificant amounts for the most part of the rest of this generation. The 360 and PS3 share the majority of their games, but Microsoft seems to have the slightly more important exclusives for the Western markets. That however is pretty much offset by Sony's stronger brand recognition in continental Europe. So the momentum between the two systems will mostly shift due to pricecuts and rarely due to a game release. If we assume that the PS3 beats the 360 in Japan by an additional two million by the end of its lifetime, that still leaves the 360 with a four million lead in the Western markets and as mentioned in the previous paragraph, it looks unlikely that the PS3 could overcome this. The lifespans of both systems will end at pretty much the same time, because they are both dependent on each other in terms of third party releases, so the supposed advantage of a longer lifespan for the PS3 is unrealistic. |
I'm impressed that this post came from you.
FF, GT5 and a 100 buck price drop should get ps3 selling. Sadly the elite will probably be available for $200 bucks by then.. so It will be a close call.. good for u M$
Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

This generation Sony's games division has seen even more red ink than Microsoft's.

No thanks.
you should, it's about 99% true.
except for the fact that he underestimates sony's brand loyalty and recognition, everything is spot on.
Your post is actually least likely to be true.

Yea i can believe this, microsoft can win this for sure if they are willing to dish out the money. Sony has lost so much more than them this gen and are a much smaller and more vulnerable company right now.
currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

TLR and SO4 will probably have the same effect as ToV which means 1-2 weeks of 20k units in Japan. I don't think you can say that about FFXIII. If Sony can drop the PS3 prices at the launch of FFXIII, it will sell like hot cakes in Japan and I doubt you'll see the PS3 under 20k in Japan any longer. Since I don't work for Sony I don't really know if they have plan or if it'll be advantageous for them to drop the price, but it could very well happen imo. That said, I don't think the PS3 will overtake the 360 sales worldwide anytime soon. The game library is getting much better as well as the online, but the 360 has already established itself as the main HD console in America. Added to that, developers love to develop for the 360 and you'll keep seeing good games for it and it will keep selling outside Japan. |
I don't believe that people interested in Halo already have a 360. There are plenty more because it will hit the 10 Million unit mark this year. Halo 3: Recon will keep the trend going and keep all eyes on Halo 3.
