Forums - Sony Discussion - Lair, a different opinion after EGM's review?

I stopped reading this thread after the first page... so much garbage from both sides..

goto metacritic.com
http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/lair

So far it has 2 reviews, one from play and one from gamepro.

More should be up within the next couple days.. so relax people and try to post something useful for once.

If you feel better with this silly 5,5 - good for you. Have a nice day. I'm not telling this game is outstanding 10/10 production but 5.5 is a joke. You can trust only this one review because it suits you but reality is different.

I think the real issue is that most people disagree over what a 5.0 means. 5 is actually the midpoint of the scale which means that unless we are curving the scale (common but very bad practice) a 5 SHOULD represent an average game and most games should fall into that range +/- 1 point. Unfortunately we have been taught to see a 5 as a failure and so we disregard what the scale really means and instead base our scores on school grading.

When I see a 5.5 it just means that the game is slightly above average but no where near great. A 7.0 would be something truly good and worth getting while anything 8.0 and up is phenomenal. At least that is how I try to scale things when I review but the point is reviews are not using a standardized scaling system. One persons 5.5 may very well be another persons 7.5. The real meat of a review is in the text itself not in the arbitrarily and unprofessionally contrived scoring scale being used.

I see the 0-10 scale the same way I see 0-100 grades for schoolwork. If you get a 70 (7.0), you pass, but not well. A 50 (5.0) is failing. A 90 (9.0) is wonderful.

That would work is that's how EGM used their scale but it isn't.  For EGM, a 5 is a 70% and that's how they grade things.

Except (of course) that after 4,257 articles the average score of all EGM reviews is 6.7 ...
About 50% of games have a score of 7 or higher ...

A score in the 5.5 range puts this game in the bottom 1/3 of all games reviewed by EGM ...

For reference here are some other games that EGM has given between a 5 and a 6 to (with the exception of a handful of games that may be reviewed poorly) these are not "Above Average" games

Meh, I'm only going by what EGM themselves say their own grading scheme is.

I will leave the theories as to why to the motivated peanut gallery however this game has been delayed if it has not already been posted.

http://kotaku.com/gaming/summer-is-draggin/lair-delayed-to-september-285027.php

Hey Mystic Heroes wasn't that bad, it's pretty much a Dynasty Warriors game but without the rich history and instead a story that is one part anime one part kung fu movie. Though Wrath unleashed is god awful.

I suspect IGN and Gamespot won't have reviews for this gam up until week of release so it's gonna be a long wait to find out what it got....lame.

I still think the biggest mistake was making this motion only... why would Factor 5 do this? Give the player the option to play it either way.

Also, I haven't heard anything but I'm hoping Mario Kart can be played both normally or with motion cause I would definitely prefer the latter (judging from the kart mini game on MP 8 among others).

First off. . . .Holy shit people, my thread has been hijacked into extreme argument. . .

Ckmlb, I'm pretty sure the reason for them doing it in motion only was for at least two reasons. First, they've always wanted to incorporate motion controls to a flight game and they finially have the chance to. However, this brings me to the next point, they were talking about how using the motion controls would free up buttons to make them useful for other things. For example, kind of like how the nunchuck can take away some buttons by adding some kind of movement to do an action, the controls for Lair have some things like jerking the controller back (or towards you) will cause you to do a 180 degree turn.

If the Edge review score is true it's very good, because if I'm not mistaken Edge is a tough scoring magazine isn't it?

Edge is very tough, but they have not reviewed this game. He just made that up. The new issue of Edge is out, Lair hasn't been reviewed, because the game doesn't come out in Europe until late September.
