Forums - Nintendo - Favorite Wii FPS control scheme

I own Red Steel and RE4 for my Wii. Using the remote and nunchuk works well for moving around in both games but my preference is for the scheme used by Red Steel. Aside from the naff sword fighting sequences I prefer Red Steel because the controls allow me to side step.

I don't like RE4 as much because left/right on the nunchuk is used to turn the player whereas in Red Steel the wiimote is used to turn the player as the gun sights near the edge of the screen, this leaves the left/right on the nunchuk to side-step. For instance if I know an enemy is on the left at the top of the stairs in Red Steel I can turn and walk sideways up the stairs, shooting as I go, but in RE4 I have to walk up the stairs, then turn and start shooting. Everyone will have their preference I guess.

I think that EA got it right in Need For Speed Carbon by providing 5 different methods of controlling the cars. I guess my point is with the Wii controls being different to other consoles I would like to see games come out with multiple different control schemes ala NFS Carbon, that way everyone will get the choice and will enjoy the games more rather than struggling with the controls and getting frustrated.

Zapper ftw!

i liked the redsteel control scheme (and i thought it was a good game)

Well, RE4 isn't actually an FPS, given that it is not played from the first-person perspective, and arguably not a shooter.

And yes, I prefer RE4's control scheme to Red Steel's (or COD's), but it won't work for a more fast-paced game, or if the enemies have more projectile weapons. For stop-and-pop games, it's wonderful.

So the basic Red Steel scheme should work for FPSs, if done right. It wasn't gracefully executed the first time around, however.

I never really got into Red Steel. My roommate has the game but I was busy playing other games to spend the time needed to adapt to the Red Steel controls. Looking forward to Metroid though ^_^

Metroid Prime 3 controls seem to be the best out of all of them, and the game isn't even out.

I think that the WiiZapper has potential. With the wiimote and nunchuk a known distance apart in the zapper and and fixed in position in relation to each other it must mean that the developers can tell that the zapper has moved in a certain plane and make the on screen character follow the movement. By that I mean if both nuncuck and wiimote more down at the same time it means the player has 'ducked', currently games use the c or z buttons to perform this action. I can just see gamers in their living room, holding the zapper and ducking behind the couch and the on screen character following. I wonder if you could implement a sideways roll in this way, you would need a big living room though !

Suprised to see that there are others besides me who actually enjoyed Red Steel. I think the controls in the game are adequate and were good for their time. But as developers become more familiar with the Wii, I expect good controlling games like RE4 and Metroid to become more of the norm and others devs imitate and inovate from there..........

You can't compare Red Steel with Resident Evil 4 on the way you play them. If you cannot side step in RE 4 because it goes with the idea of fear and survival.

And to control the screen with the analog is perfect with the kind of game like RE 4, imagine if you have an invisible box like in Red steel and you want to shoot a guy just at one feet of you and you want to shot him in the face and suddenly the screen move because the reticle is too high, you lose all capacity of placing shot after shot at the right place and that it's really important if you want to survive in this game, so yes, moving the camera with the analog while you have the possibility to shoot anything on the screen and fast is perfect for that kind of game.

For Red Steel, I have enjoyed the game, the shooting part of the gameplay is interesting, but it feel like it was rushed and I personnally think that it is in majority the glitches that killed the game in reviews. I also think that the invisible box is too big, they should have make it alot smaller or even take it out just like Metroid Prime 3. The Idea is there for Red Steel 2, they just have to perfect it or copy on Retro Studio's game.

Another who enjoyed Red Steel here, even if it was flawed and rushed. I liked the idea of flicking the nunchuck to reload and the zooming in. Turning your wrist and having the gun onscreen follow the movement was also a very nice touch.

If there was one thing they should add to the sequel is the ability to change the bounding box and turn rate. Medal of Honor Vanguard has both features and I really liked the aiming and turning mechanics in that game. It even offered a fixed cursor mode, like other console FPS, but having tried it, I don't think that will ever work on the Wii. The remote is just too quick.

RE4 is more third person, so it's not really comparable, but I love that control scheme as well.

Current systems owned: Wii, 360. I'll get a PS3 when hell freezes over!... or when the price drops to a reasonable level. Whichever comes first.
