@GamingGen Motion control isn't this gen it's been around much longer than the Wii.

Would some one mind explaining how Wii-Fit or Wii-Sports is a technical achievement on any level ?

True. Motion Control has been around in different forms since the 70's. But this is a major leap for home console videogaming.

Piggybacking... and superreal graphics were around before the PS3 (see Hollywood). It's not the idea that the innovation is completely new, but been successfully delivered to the home market

In that case, I have to go with Motion Control (Wii Sports if it must go to a single game). Most of the games people have named - GoW2, GTA4, MGS4- seem to be simply straight line progressions of past achievements. Motion control was the one and only major departure from convention which will inevitably change the standard for the consoles of tomorrow.

MGS4. best graphics, best story, best cinematics, best V.O's = best game and biggest technical achievement.

Story and VO are achievements to be sure, but artistic ones, not technical. And cinematics is really just an application of graphics.

Even if I don't like it, Wii Fit and some games that use the wii board.  It is a pretty huge technical achievement for bringng back full interation in the home.

Other noteables would be:

Wii Sports (interaction)

Rockband (interaction/multiplayer)

Crysis (graphically)

MGS4 (tons of features/graphics/A.I./ very enjoyable cutscenes)

GEOW 1 (1 started it all, 2 is very much so a polished extension, great series)

Uncharted (a.i  especially)

Conduit (getting the most out of a "inferior" system and proving it can be done)

Call of Duty 4 (hands down one of the best games ever made.  I don't know many who would argue against this)

Forza 2 (for even coming close to Gran turismo in quality/reality)

LBP (game mechanics are amazing, player supported levels = amazing and inovative, would rival the wii board/wii fit)

Too early to call but probably amazing:

RE5

Killzone (if it turns out to be anything like the beta, this game will set the standard for fps and multiplayerfps)

Gran turismo 5

I could add more but I think this is enough for now.  This is a good generation to own all 3 systems.

*Note: the reason why I dislike Wiifit is because you don't need a video game to do fitness.  It is almost a slap in the face when you meet someone and they say they do Yoga with wiifit and you have been practicing for over 7 years and they think they are even in the same realm of practice.  The game mostly provides the instant gratification most people are seeking but don't get from exercise.  Then again, what videogame doesnt supply a form of Instant gratification?  All personal angst aside... it is a technical achievement, and very popular at that.

I'm one of them. It certainly wasn't very technically stunning- the graphics were average, the AI wasn't great and the multiplayer is starting to get buggy.

Whats up with the MP?  I haven't played online in a few months and I rarely had issues with MP (aside from glitchers).  A.I. is average for any IW game but I think the graphics are a little better than average.  Technically speaking the game has set the gold standard for online multiplayer.

To begin with, it was great. Completely bug free. Now, I have experienced:

-People floating a few centimeters off the ground

-Games closing for no reason

-Lag

I think they've stopped maintaining it.

That's fine, but honestly it's being used in a few hospitals for theraputic reasons. It's not the balance board that matters. It's the feedback. An oppertunity to know that your doing it right.

The feedback is called gratification which is what the person doesnt get if they workout by themselves, but this is to the average gamer.  It's biggest use will be in the commercial hospice sector.  My grandmother is in an "Active Senior Citizen's Complex" (nursing home) and they have Wii's in their entertainment halls on the campus (4 per hall and they have 5 halls on site).  I've also helped set up some hospitals in the Baltimore area that were using Wii Fit in rehabilitation areas (one of them was for spinal cord injuries to work on balance) and they were also installed in the children's wards.  In this case it is a way for them to have fun with their rehabilitation which can be strenuous and testing for a child.  It isn't so much the feedback they get, it is an interaction with something other than the hospital staff which takes their mind off of the Hospital and their ailment all together.  This is another reason why it is a technical achievement this gen, because they have effectively linked a console to the corporate world and they are selling thousands of units solely to this sector.

Outside of these reasons I'm not a fan of it.

Side note on Wii's:

My grandmother was in a bowling league for 35 years until she couldn't bowl any longer and now she has joined the Wii Bowling league at her home.  The system as a whole is great for these centers and most of the senior citizens are able to buy Wii's for their private suites at a discounted price.

In that case, as much as I hate to say it, the title would probably belong to a Wii game. Or Little Big Planet. I vote for the later simply because I am not partial to the Wii catalogue at all, at the moment.

Are you on XBL or PSN?  I buy all my multiplats on PS3 because the lag/issues on live are much worse and more frequent.  I know on PSN the game drops started up after they mixed the EU and NA server pools back together and the new "fad" of glitchers is to pull out the ethernet cable from the ps3/xbox360 unit to drop a game and avoid a loss/tarnished record (doesnt record until after the match ends so they avoid the potential bad score/loss/drop in k/d).  But that has been an issue since May.

CoD4, the first console shooter that brought together an amazing campaign mode with incredible multiplayer.

I recall Goldeneye 64 having a great single AND multiplayer... You mean "online multiplayer". Even then, Halo 2 did much more for that aspect of the genre than CoD4 did.

PSN. I don't own a 360. Although I thought the quality was much better on Live. Being paid and all.

Funnily enough, despite owning a PS3, I use wired. It's a lot more stable. Back when I was using wireless, the game crashed even more.

But the most annoying and significant of those things is the dropping. I'm lucky if, after a game, the lobby doesn't close, resulting in me needing to autofind a match another five times until I find something.
