What is cyber monday?

I know for a fact(being in the traveling computer techincian field) that a large percentage of workers dont do shit at work other than play flash games, myspace dick around and shop. The monday after black friday is big cause people realise its getting near christmas and do a lot of shipping that monday.

The only problem with this is that buying things online does not have the same 'urgency' as going to a store on the day after Thanksgiving. Brick and Mortar stores often have a limited supply of products and deals that are only good for that particular day, so customers will line up the night before just to get in the building. When they finally get inside, they'll see the slathering masses picking over everything in the store and will probably buy things they weren't planning on just because they feel like they won't have the chance to decide again if they wait.

Cyber Monday, because it's online shopping, just does not engender that same feeling of, "I have to buy this now, or it will be gone tomorrow". Even if there are deals that are only good for that single day, the lack of physical evidence of other people interested in the same items will reduce impulse buying.

However, I don't think it's outrageous at all to assume that online shopping will eventually overtake retail shopping for revenue during the Christmas shopping season, and it seems almost certain like that will be the case by 2015. Who wants to go to the store and deal with Joe-Who-Doesn't-Believe-In-Showers elbowing his way in front of you in a line of 150 miserable, stressed-out people when you can shop at home?

So Black Friday is only big because it's when Americans realise Christmas is coming?... I understand it's a big shopping day but still don't get why... I mean shops have special 1 day deals which helps, but the shops must have had reason to give deals then in the first place so what started this all off?.

Was BF originally a moderately big day because of the "Christmas around the corner" thing (then stores blew it out of proportion), or was it started because Walmart/other big name decided to cut prices one year and other stores competed?
