Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo 64, and Nintendo Gamecube; Dissapointments?

Dissapointing only due to lack of sales and 3rd party support.

I was never dissapointed with the quality of major games on the system, just the lack of new quality games after the initial few years. Nintendo has had a problem working well with 3rd parties, and I think that is one major reason both of those systems had difficulties. That along with Nintendo's selection of lesser media on both systems (cartridges instead of cds, to a lesser extent GC disks instead of DVDs) played a role in both systems' dissapointments.

I would concider both dissapointments in some ways, but not failures.

I love the N64 and the GameCube! ^_^

but so many people hated them.

I had both 64 and the cube....... it wasn't after reading on many internet sites that i learned the N64 was considered less superior to the PS.

I loved the cartriges for the 64 but i do remember the paying $70 for Zelda .....:(

Well like someone told me...not everyone is going to like what you like...so I made a list of games I like and buy them and after I finished playing that game I feel satisfied knowing that I played the best games on that system...Sega Saturn I had but it was my step dads and I enjoyed Virtua Fighter, and Panzer Dragoon....they were the best games..considering at the time I was into the Playstation....so I dont consider anything a failure when I like it...Its only a failure because the mass market doesnt like it...and the N64 and the GC were the best...Goldeneye, Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Stadium, Super Mario 64, and on the Gamecube-Super Mario Sunshine, F-Zero GX, and Wind Waker was the best games ever!!

what is this, I thought you were a Halo guy????

Woops, thanks for pointing that out to me.  Playing RE4 on the wii right now, it must not be my style of games since I think its good but not spectacular to me.

Your going to expect a 10 year old to make his parents waste 500 dollars on a video game console? Sony made it cheap for the consumer, they were supposed to release it at $799.99, they have been losing money for us the consumer to be able to enjoy there console even though they are losing money just to make people happy.

That thinking is hilarious. $600 is NOT cheap, even though it really costs $800 to produce. It's still way too expensive for 90% of videogamers out there. Trust me, if the PS3 WAS really such a great deal, then, people would BUY it. But it's way overpriced at $600 for a gaming console.

Like I said, if it WASN'T overpriced, more people would BUY it.

The Playstation 3 is expensive when compared to its competition, but for its price, you get the best value.

Neither was a dissappointment to me. However, they could have sold better if they had better third party libraries and weren't so slow to lower prices of games.

N64 cartridges made it costly to develop and manufacture. They made the limits on storage almost impossible to do what developers wanted to do. It also mean that $19.99 greatest hits series was out of the question.

GCN, Nintendo was too focused on profit per game sold, too kiddie oriented in design, and lacked third party support. If they had lowered the price of several first party games, parents during the holidays would have been willing to buy, because "hey look at all the $20 games". Smash and Double Dash were still $29 when I last checked. The thing was a purple lunch box. At 25 I don't really care what my game console looks like, but when I was 9 I wanted it to look cool and futuristic (i.e. Bad Ass). It lacked third party support because Nintendo didn't aggressively market the GCN early on and had a moderate initial install base, the discs had small capacity, and nintendo's demands were very high for acceptable game performance.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.
