Forums - Sales - PS3 vs GC (Japan+Americas)

I just happened to take a look about how PS3 is doing as opposed to GC.

Here's the chart for Japan:

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=GC&reg1=Japan&cons2=PS3&reg2=Japan&cons3=X360&reg3=Other&weeks=156

As you can see, PS3 is tracking really close to Gamecube, biggest difference being Gamecubes earlier launch to christmas, in relation to PS3 launch and PS3 seems to be getting a little steam, while GC was mainly losing some.

Americas chart:

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=GC&reg1=America&cons2=PS3&reg2=America&cons3=X360&reg3=Other&weeks=156

PS3 was tracking slightly below GC, until the start of this year, when it "took off", in relation to GC sales, and currently is a million above GC in the same timeframe. Although, PS3 sales have been up largely due to pricecut, which GC on its third(?) christmas, so the PS3 boost is expected to be relatively smaller than GC had on its 3rd christmas.

And in all fairness, here's the others chart, where the real difference between GC and PS3 sales is at:

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=GC&reg1=Total+Other&cons2=PS3&reg2=Total+Other&cons3=X360&reg3=Other&weeks=156

So, PS3 is basically doing better than GC only in others, but the real question is, that are we able to use Gamecube sales and trends to look how PS3 will be doing in the future. For Americas, we propably have to wait until early next year, when the christmas boost will be over. Although, PS3 has one advantage in relation to GC, which is that PS3 will still be getting 3rd party games, unlike GC at this timeframe. The games that the competition will be getting surely will have impact on PS3 aswell.

Only in relation to GC.

Others chart:

Europe chart:

PS3 isn't doing badly at all in Europe/others, only about 3M behind Wii, but it's not excactly a runaway success.

Others killed the GameCube... it would have reach 30mi if had there at least the same support X360 is getting.

The GameCube sold pretty decently initially due to its low entry pricing. Not remarkable there are many Mario and Zelda fans out there, it was a nice console geared at young kids.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

Thats pretty cool,I would have thought I never hear GC and PS3 in same sentence.

Take my love, take my land..

Not a good idea to compare GC to PS3, main reason being the latter comes after 2 100M+ selling consoles. PS3 sales are just waiting to burst, games and price cuts to come for the console + brand name = outselling GC easily

So ps3 is selling better in 2 of the biggest regions and on par with gc in Japan. Sorry, ps3 is not the next gc.

Actually it was Americas that killed Gamecube, just like it did with SNES. Japan killed N64 and surprisingly, others killed GBA, well if we look at where a Nintendo console lost the most sales from its predecessor. N64:s Americas sales almost equal GC:s WW sales.

Really? I didn't know N64 was really so great in America :o
So GC fell in America, and N64 in Japan. Both fell in others but Nintendo never was great outside America/Japan.
