I just happened to take a look about how PS3 is doing as opposed to GC.

Here's the chart for Japan:

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=GC&reg1=Japan&cons2=PS3&reg2=Japan&cons3=X360&reg3=Other&weeks=156

As you can see, PS3 is tracking really close to Gamecube, biggest difference being Gamecubes earlier launch to christmas, in relation to PS3 launch and PS3 seems to be getting a little steam, while GC was mainly losing some.

Americas chart:

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=GC&reg1=America&cons2=PS3&reg2=America&cons3=X360&reg3=Other&weeks=156

PS3 was tracking slightly below GC, until the start of this year, when it "took off", in relation to GC sales, and currently is a million above GC in the same timeframe. Although, PS3 sales have been up largely due to pricecut, which GC on its third(?) christmas, so the PS3 boost is expected to be relatively smaller than GC had on its 3rd christmas.

And in all fairness, here's the others chart, where the real difference between GC and PS3 sales is at:

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=GC&reg1=Total+Other&cons2=PS3&reg2=Total+Other&cons3=X360&reg3=Other&weeks=156

So, PS3 is basically doing better than GC only in others, but the real question is, that are we able to use Gamecube sales and trends to look how PS3 will be doing in the future. For Americas, we propably have to wait until early next year, when the christmas boost will be over. Although, PS3 has one advantage in relation to GC, which is that PS3 will still be getting 3rd party games, unlike GC at this timeframe. The games that the competition will be getting surely will have impact on PS3 aswell.
