I think in UT it boils down to the mastery of one of the ten weapons. The guy with the rocket launcher wont always win one on one with a skilled dodger with the paltry bio-rifle. the sniper rifle guy might be fried by a skilled ASMD rifle player. UT forces you to develop a game style of your own.( of course i must exclude the redeemer ,which , in classic UT, owns all).

I guess it comes down to the style of game you like to play.

I love the weapon matchups of halo. It helps break the usual GO GO GO FIRE FIRE FIRE I hated in FPS multiplayer games before Halo. Like no one would be stupid enough to charge at you with a regular machine gun if you have shotgun. They will most likely walk backwards and fire at you... However if all of a sudden you switch to the needler which may be your second weapon...the other guy is pretty fucked...but he may still try to throw a sticky grenade and try to get the "death from the grave".

Usually all the good weapons need to be earned as they are stratigicly placed in areas equally accesable to both teams. And if you don't get the rocket launcher or a shotgun on some maps...this forces you to work as a team...or get raped.

Im surprised no one is talking about Return to castle Wolfenstien which I would take over UT series for multiplayer any day.

The same exact applies to  UT. I'm not about to run into a guy who has a flak cannon, which 1 shots. If they run away they pull out rockets or a shock rifle and you die. There's more than enough strategy than just run and gun, if you wanna be on the top of the scoreboard. Of course you also have to have skills to back that up not just knowing what  to do and when. I also felt RTCW kinda lacked, but I did enjoy the tesla gun immensely.

Around the Network

To OP :

HL2 is a great shooter (I bought Orange Box and rushed it), I must admit it. The atmosphere, the characters, the puzzle involving the physical engine, the overall difficulty of the games clearly makes it a masterpiece.

I was a bit worried about the fact that i had the impression of following a straight road. Sometimes, there was an accumulation of puzzles that i found annoying. These are the only flaws that i found.

Somehow, you make references to actual FPS, such as Halo (overhyped !) or GoW. If you hadn't, try to play Duke Nukem and Doom, the orginal. Forget the graphic gap. You'll see that all the above referencesto FPS are just the legacy of those two, imho.

You do know the first FPS was Wolfenstein 3D right? basically the FPS that even Doom and Duke supporters have to node to is Wolfenstein. Without it Doom and Duke Nukem wouldnt exist or Halo or Unreal or Gears or any shooters we have today. I'm sure the genre would have been made eventually, we just wouldnt be talking about the games we have now without Wolfenstein.

Gears 2 is a 3rd person shooter. They've had those since pong.

I think we owe Wolfenstein a lot on a certain level, for games like Gears, as well as FPS, but that is more for its 3d elements as a shooter.

That said, yes, we have innovation to thank for many things. That is a main reason Nintendo is still the greatest company in gaming. They insist on innovation. What might not seem great today is laying the way for the Gears 2 of the future.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.
