Forums - Nintendo - Trace memory & Hotel Dusk

Well, I've been looking for new DS games to get, and my mind came back to a couple old games I really wanted a long time ago. Anybody like them? Impressions?

i have only played hotel dusk and i really love this game but i would say it's more like an interactive novel than a game .. the story is great and the dialogue is well written

I need to get them. I love these kind of games but never have enough money when I see them.

Hotel Dusk was pretty neat. Not the greatest of games, mind you, but it was easily worth the price of admission. Good story, writing, and characters. The puzzles are a bit too simple, and there's the odd place where you're left with no idea what to do next, but overall I'd call it a good game.

Haven't played Trace Memory yet (I can never find it), so I'm afraid I can't say.

Here's my DS christmas list for this year:

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin
Hotel Dusk: Room 215
Trace Memory
Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations
Panzer Tactics DS

i JUST bought Hotel Dusk on Saturday. i have to say, i love it so far.

Hotel Dusk: Room 215 was a bit of a disappointment in my opinion. I thought it had better artwork than Another Code (Trace Memory), but the gameplay was a bit of a non-event. It's a first-person perspective adventure, like Heart of China, but it also has a map. That's all fine. The non-event gameplay occurs when you hit certain predefined conversation points laid out all over the game. The conversations help to progress the story, but they're mandatory and starting/finishing them feels pretty much out of your control. Somebody talks to you and you just have to follow the rather long dialogue trees until they're finished with you. Worse still, some of the conversations have options that effectively correlate to: Die, Die and Progress the Story. Not a very fun experience. The story wasn't that great either, so I don't know why the game was so keen to shove it in my face.

Both games are a bit of a departure from the adventure game norm. I guess this is partially a product of being on the DS. Trace Memory features a top-down perspective, but feels much more like a traditional adventure game. The story's much more tight than that of Hotel Dusk. It's almost a murder mystery or detective story, not sci-fi as you're first lead to believe. And the game's setting isn't used to much advantage other than to limit the potential size of the game's cast. The puzzles (except for one) are too easy. A better game than Hotel Dusk IMHO, but there are better DS adventures out there.

My advice: If you want real adventure gaming on your DS, get good DS port (read reviews) of a PC adventure. There are a few good ones out there. If you're tossing up between the two you mentioned, however, go with Trace Memory.

@ gurok

Hotel Dusk has little gameplay and feels more like an interactive novel. Trace Memory (Another Code) has some good and innovative puzzles using the unique DS features, but is a really short game (about five hours long).

I liked both games even though Hotel Dusk is hardly a game and more like a book and Trace Memory is too short.

Trace Memory is one of the first few games I played and it really did open up all the tricks you could do with the DS that I didn't think of. It's worthy of at least 1 play through as a bargain price of $15 or less.
