I'm more of a Nomura fan, to be honest. FF IX character designs were pretty average, but the envirioments were superb.

More seriously, though, Amano has done at least preliminary character designs for most Final Fantasy games up through 9 (yes, including 7, and I liked his Sephiroth a lot more). Difference between him and Nomura is that Nomura's style is more like a mangaka and Amano is something more akin to a master painter.

Do you have an image of Amano's Sephiroth? I'm interested. Though I prefer Nomura to Amano, Nomura's style suits me better. I love a lot of his character designs: Vincent, Reno, Auron, Sora, Neku, Joshua, etc.

This includes his image of Cloud, Aeris, and Red XII - the resolution is waaaaaaay too small to appreciat what's being done here but you can still easily see how he's not much of a manga artist like Nomura is.

Of course, I prefer his stuff for the games he actually fully illustrated, like his depiction of the Behemoth in the original Final Fantasy:

For those that think the Kitase and Nomura are pissed because of the FFXIII Xbox 360 announcement, I think you're wrong. This seems like an internal problem. There seems to be a lot of tension inside Square Enix and it didn't start recently. Don't forget that Uematsu and Matsuno (the original director of FFXII who left during the project) left the company recently. I think there are a lot of conflicts inside the company and that is the reason why Kitase and Nomura could leave the company.



How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

Honestly, I don't like it much, pretty artistic, but his face looks ...I dunno...not good, and it reminds me of Kuja (that's not a good thing)

I don't like the face on the Amano seph, and his clothes are... not too fitting with FF VII in general.. but this would've worked marvelously in another game. It's very well done.

Here, ironically, is the original design of Butz from FFV.

You can see why his art wasn't used to its fullest in the SNES era, at any rate.

I thought the game had a lot of charisma, which is something lacking in recent FF games. Stop hating on FFIX!
