I'm more of a Nomura fan, to be honest. FF IX character designs were pretty average, but the envirioments were superb.

More seriously, though, Amano has done at least preliminary character designs for most Final Fantasy games up through 9 (yes, including 7, and I liked his Sephiroth a lot more). Difference between him and Nomura is that Nomura's style is more like a mangaka and Amano is something more akin to a master painter.

@Johann: They do fit with the franchise... with IX, at least. But some of them are pretty bad, like Quina (wtf), and Kuja (Amano was horny).
