Forums - Gaming - Is Kingdom Hearts only popular because of the Disney characters?

@wfz: Dunno, couldn't really say. To be fair, it still did do quite well. It's one of the few RPG's that managed to crack 1mil in the region alone; Besides Pokemon/DQ/FF, only Monster Hunter has been able to manage this feat since KH released.

As for Tron... I really did hate that part. The place looks like crap in the game, and I had never watched the movie.

The first game was not as good as the first simply because they took out somee of the Disney for the sake of focusing on more of Square's rootin' tootin' bull manure. I never did care for the actual plot in the first game, but that moment near the end where one sees Chernabog from Fantasia as one of the final bosses is one of the best things Square ever made.

I don't know if it's the reason for most people or not, but for me, it wasn't, in fact, for that reason I almost missed the games, I decided to play the first despite the Disney characters, not because I hate Disney, but because it seemed too kiddy to be enjoyable. Of course, having hated the first game and loved the second one, I can say that the Disney characters fit very well, and that some worlds are certainly memorable, but for me, the Disney part's just an extra. A good extra, of course, though.

- Square Enix makes a game with Disney!

Tha forums:  Fuck SE!

Only Soriku thinks that the Disney characters are still important, that way his argument of this game either being casual or targeted towards kids can hold weight in his eyes

I enjoyed KH1 not due to characters, but the actual game play - which was fantastic.

It reminded me of a 3d Secret of Mana mixed with Legend of Zelda - A true blue RPG with great platforming elements. Combat was very good, alchemy was cool, and gummy ship building was neat too.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

So the Disney characters are no longer important?

It's likely the only reason KH1 was able to sell so much, and if this isn't corrected, the next KH cannot do as well as the first. It would sell more like the sequel, but that's what I'm expecting, anyway. Nomura isn't really known for making games friendly to the less "hardcore." It's always loaded with complex stories and game mechanics. That's mainly the reason I see it doing fine on HD consoles, since it doesn't take advantage of the Wii's userbase.

I must say, I think KH does have the potential to be huge, if it played to the Wii's strengths. Nomura's games don't really attract new audiences, though, which is the problem (actually, I'd say it's Squre Enix's problem in general).

Are Disney characters the only reason KH series is popular -- No. One of the reasons it is mega-popular -- Yes.

Disney characters are a hook. They will draw people who might not otherwise be predisposed to buy this particular game. They also get people who might not even consider this type of game. That was very important in establishing the franchise, though probably less now. But without the Disney characters, it is not KH.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Non-Disney, it's all about the FF characters.

Despite seeming to disagree with me at first: This, for all that was bolded.

And no, I don't think that the Disney characters aren't important, but many argue that simply because Mickey Mouse is on the front, that means the game is targeted at "casuals". I could have sworn that KH was about a deep, engaging story and tweaked/refined gameplay. But the proponents of KH:Wii always say that this is a "casual" game
