Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why does Nintendo take that long to make games compared to HD consoles?

@Oyv~: What games were released in America this year for the Wii? Please tell me. I'm dying to know.

I don't see how that has a lot to do with what I said. My point was, that if you buy 1/3 Nintendo games, and you buy 1 game every quarter, you'll be straight on right now.

I'm assuming you don't want 3rd party or multiplats right?

Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Mario Kart Wii

Wii Fit

Endless Ocean

Super Mario Sluggers

Wario Land: Shake it

Animal Crossing: City Folk

Wii Music

Link's Crossbow Training

Sure, you may not like all the titles, but no other company has released this many quality titles in 2008.

Well, they have a lot of franchises to make games out of, so why can't release some of the story games? I know they thought the Wii wouldn't be that successful, so they released a lot on the first year, but when they saw the green bills they stopped caring. It's easy for them, even if they don't make games the Wii will keep on selling, and that's a fact. They got screwed by money, that's all I'm saying.

And their policies are stupid most of the times. Not releasing games in America, when every game makes it to Japan, even Metroid, Battalion Wars, Cap Rainbow, Disaster, Fatal Frame 4 which all failed pretty badly and all would have sold more in America, like it's the case with almost any Nintendo game. Also, not announcing games until they are on the shelves is a bad idea, look what happened to most of the "surprise announcements" they all failed in a very sad manner.

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Because great games take time.... now, imagine nintendo (Superior games) games. Even more time.

Zelda TP: Nov 2006, Zelda Wii 2010? (4 years)
Super Mario Galaxy: Nov 2007, next Mario 2010-11? (3 - 4 years)
Pikmin 2: Aug 2004, Pikmin 3: 2009-10? (5 - 6 years)
Star Fox GC: Feb 2005, Star Fox Wii: 2009-2010? (4-5 years)
Animal Crossing GC: Sept 2002, Animal Crossing CF: Nov 2008 (6 years)
Pokemon Battle Revolution: Dec 2006, Pokemon Wii 2009-11? (3-5 years)
Wii Sports: Nov 2006, Wii Sports Resort: June 2009 (2.5 years)
Mario Party 8: June 07, MP9: 2009-10? (2-3 years)
Metroid Prime 3: Sept 2007, Metroid Prime 4: 2010-12? (3-5 years)
Fire Emblem RD: May 2007, FE Wii 2 2010-2011? (3-4 years)
F-Zero GX: June 2003, F-Zero Wii: 2010-11? (7 - 8 years)
1080º Avalanche: December 2003, 1080º Wii: 2010-11? (7 - 8 years)

when a game is finished, Nintendo don't immediately put that development team in to full swing for the next game in the same franchise. they may have a handfull start the concepts but full development doesnt start until a couple years before intended release. do you honestly think that 1080 and F-Zero Wii have been in development for 7-8 years?

Nintendo have to release their titles at sensible intervals. firstly it would be bad for third-parties if they have to compete with popular Nintendo franchises all the time. second, Nintendo aren't going to risk the popularity of their long running franchises by releasing them every second year.

the only times it made sense was with the Metroid Prime series, where the stories connected.

Prime -> Echoes = 2yrs

Echoes -> Corruption = 3yrs

and likely the only reason Corruption was 3yrs because they had moved it to Wii for showing the console's FPS potential.
Nintendo don't take longer to make games. they just don't come back to their franchises straight away.

instead of looking how long it is between titles of certain franchises, you should look at how long it is between titles of Nintendo development teams. but even then it may not indicate length of development as releases may have been pushed back to a suitable date instead of being released as soon as completed.

nintendo doesnt whore out their franchises . . .

wow thats a new one

Sure, Nintendo doesn't release all games in Americas, but you didn't have to wait 6 months for Brawl or Fire Emblem, did you?

And it isn't like Nintendo stopped making games. They have small teams working on each game.

Team works on game, releases it in 2006. Uses at least 2 years to make a new game = 2009 ish release.

So the games that are out now, are made by teams who didn't create anything for the Wii's launch year.

 Because they don't want to run those series into the ground. Releasing a thousand iterations of one franchise every generation will kill the series. They release the games very often and have already released 3 blockbuster titles this year with a fourth on the way. I cannot think of another developer who can make the same claim.

Starcraft 2 ID: Gnizmo 229

Can we report someone for incessant whining? Just because you don't know what they are doing doesn't mean the teams are not working. You also claim these "surprise announcements" fail somehow, yet MK Wii was a "surprise announcement" and that worked out well. Just relax and Nintendo will deliver the goods. They are too smart to sit back and just count money.

@Oyv: Link's CrossBow Training is a 2007 game.

Then you have the traditional games from them, like the ones with established franchises and the other that are the new Wii Series.

I tend to like mostly games that have a story or characters behind, because that's what the Wii is lacking.

So Wii Fit, Wii Music, Endless Ocean and Animal Crossing City Folk go into the "Everyone plays" category.

MKWii and Mario Super Sluggers, go into the "bridge" category. They are games with no story or character developments whatsoever, but have recognizable characters from Nintendo.

Lastly, SSBB and Wario Land: Shake it are the "core" games. And note that they aren't games like SMG, Zelda TP, Super Paper Mario, Fire Emblem, MP3, but games that are accessible for everyone and easy to play, with not many core elements.

Maybe 2008 was the year of the casual gamer and the Mario fan, but they released no other important franchise besides that, and 2009 is looking to be even poorer, that's why I'm worried about Nintendo simply not releasing games anymore here. I want them to go back to the times where every game (mostly) made it to America. If they had at least released FF4 and Disaster here I wouldn't be complaining at all. But seeing as how Reggie is hating core games and popular Nintendo franchises more and more as time passes by, this situation is something woth taking a look at.

I hope that in 2010 games from recognizable franchises make it to the Wii.

Again, you're in the minority. You're a hardcore Wii gamer, who doesn't like the bridge game, and doesn't like the Ps360 games. You're essentially putting yourself into liking 5% of the great games that release. Seriously, I believe you should get a 360 or Ps3. You could at least look at it. I myself see no need for them, but you seem like a person who could definately enjoy one.
